SERVICE LEARNING PROJECTS IN HWA CHONG
Note: These are not all of the ongoing SL projects
FINANCE SOCIETY
Hwa Chong Finance Society is a student-led organisation aiming to bridge students with the real world of finance. Through organising talks and workshops, as well as posting on platforms like Instagram, we introduce students to the world of finance, including financial careers, education, and other fascinating news.
PROJECT COCONUT
Project Coconut is a service learning project which aims to connect seniors with technology. We have successfully raised 30,000 SGD for uncontactable seniors to buy phones. We are now befriending seniors virtually, helping them to alleviate their loneliness.
PROJECT EGGYOLK
Hello, we are Project Eggyolk, 5 friends who are aiming to create a positive school environment and promote self-care by reminding our schoolmates of the importance of mental health! As simple actions can have a big impact, we wish to encourage students to take care of themselves and the people around them.
PROJECT PUFFERFISH
Project Pufferfish aims to help children from low-income families by empowering them through education like subject-tutoring, and enriching them through hands-on arts-and-crafts activities, thus providing holistic learning and development of these children, all while having fun.
PROJECT TYPEWRITER
Project Typewriter was born of a passion to bring the true stories of the underprivileged into the spotlight, many of whose struggles are unfamiliar and intangible to the public due to a lack of exposure. Being a versatile medium that connects the network of heartstrings in our community, we had faith that our writings could empower the underprivileged each time the words take root in the public mind and inspire a fresh wave of empathy towards them, be it in the form of monetary or spiritual support. Our activities include a monthly publication on our website (currently titled ‘heartwritten’) with a melting pot of prose or poetry featuring a specific target group from Ray of Hope—the beneficiary organisation which we collaborate with—each time. We also hope to raise funds via merchandise-selling (such as handcrafted accessories) for more prompt and concrete support for our beneficiaries. Do support us on Instagram @projectype.writer!
YOUTH LEADERS’ EXPERIENTIAL PROGRAMME (YLEP)
The Youth Leaders’ Experiential Learning Programme (YLEP) of Hwa Chong is a service learning project aimed at instilling a passion for lifelong volunteerism. Working hand in hand with West Coast Constituency Town Council and Grassroots Organisation, we aim to provide assistance in any form we can in a myriad of activities such as Meet the People Sessions (MPS), peer tutoring sessions and various ad hoc events.
