Match Report: Volleyball Girls vs ACJC

May 16th, 2010 by CCA PRO

A’ Division Girls Volleyball Finals 2010

HCI vs ACJC

True to their traditional rivalry, Hwa Chong and Anglo-Chinese Junior College were set to face off in the 2010 ‘A’ division girls volleyball finals. With school pride on the line, it promised a fiery match for all supporters to savour at the Woodlands Indoor Stadium, which was further boosted by the raucous cheers of both schools’ ardent supporters.

Game 1: HC 25-20 AC

The match started brightly with all players pumped up and ready for the challenge. With a beautiful opening set from Cassandra, it was given to Aina, who drew first blood with a precise dropshot. Lydia continued pulling the lead with an ace serve that scored another point. AC were not pushovers, and quickly countered back with solid defensive displays to even out Hwa Chong’s advantage. Both sides were tied at 7-7.

Hwa Chong surged ahead after that and managed to cement a 4 point lead at 12-8. AC quickly called for a timeout to regroup and restrategize to break Hwa Chong’s dominance. At the technical timeout, the score stood at 20-20 with both sides’ supporters cheering on their respective sides as the game inched towards game point. After 2 successive spikes by Hwa Chong’s #1 Xinni, AC called for a timeout yet again. By now, the Hwa Chong contingent of supporters was ecstatic and cheered their side on to clinch the first game.

After the timeout, HC regained their momentum with yet another powerful spike by Xinni to bring the game to 23-20. The atmosphere was tense as AC’s supporters desperately began a series of cheers to spur their team on. But it was to no avail, as HC took the first game with a final score of 25-20 to Hwa Chong.

Game 2 HC 20-25 AC

AC started the game positively and soon raced to an 2-8 lead with a series of clever dropshots by their #8. After the technical timeout, Hwa Chong climbed to 10-6. HC’s #5 then scored a series of intelligent cross-court dropshots to reduce AC’s lead to 9-11. After the break the timeout, AC sprinted to an 8-point lead over Hwa Chong. Hwa Chong answered back with Xinni cutting the lead to 15-18 with a series of accurate spikes.

AC called for a timeout yet again to break Hwa Chong’s momentum. The AC tactical change paid dividends, as AC surged to a 17-23 lead. At this juncture, the Hwa Chong supporters began a series of schools cheers to boost their sides’ morale. It helped as AC committed several foul serves, allowing HC to close down the score  to 20-24. AC eventually took this set with a score of 20-25.

Game 3: HC 23-25 AC

Hwa Chong started positively to a 2-0 lead, but was overtaken by AC who gained a 4-8 lead over Hwa Chong. After the break, the score was now 13-17. Though AC still maintained a 4-point lead over Hwa Chong, the fervent match support from Hwa Chong paved the way for an astonishing streak by their side to win point after point to catch up to AC at 18-20.

At this point, AC called for another timeout to stop the Hwa Chong juggernaut from overtaking them. It seemed not to have paid off as Hwa Chong leveled the score to 20-20 after the break. However, AC’s player #8 raised her side’s game to 20-22. This time, Hwa Chong called for a timeout as the players tried to regain their momentum. AC still led the score at 22-23, but both sides were getting the nerves as they understood the importance of clinching the 3rd game as each side had won one already. There was a slight fray at the net as AC rose to 22-24. Luck was not on Hwa Chong’s side as they committed a foul serve to lose the 3rd set 23-25

Game 4 HC 25-9 AC

AC came into the game with all guns blazing, as they went on the offensive to seek a victory and win the championship. Sure enough, they opened up a 4-point lead and looked assured in their dominant display. However, Hwa Chong demonstrated their resilience and zi qiang bu xi school spirit, and raised their game to equal AC at 6-6.

After that, the Hwa Chong team raced ahead and left AC in their wake as they started a remarkable comeback to go 13-6 up. AC grabbed a point through a foul serve by Hwa Chong after the timeout, but that was probably the only respite they got, as Hwa Chong put together a string of mesmerizing play to go 18-8 up and enjoyed a comfortable lead. Another foul serve by AC increased Hwa Chong’s lead to 19-8. It was Hwa Chong all the way as the team went for the jugular after the break, dealing AC their worse defeat at 25-9.

Game 5 HC 15: AC 11.

The tension at the stadium went up a few notches as the match reached its penultimate game. With the overall score tied at 2-2, both teams had to be at their best to win the final game and wrap up the title. Hwa Chong began well, maintaining the same form that crushed AC just minutes ago. Hwa Chong’s #8 displayed her sublime technical skills as she served up 2 aces to give Hwa Chong an important lead at this crucial moment. The score stood at 6-3. A great block by Hwa Chong’s #5 increased the score to 8-4. Xinni then gained a point to Hwa Chong with another delightful cross-court spike.

The AC players tried to muster up some resistance against Hwa Chong, and managed to equal Hwa Chong point-for-point, but still trailed by 4-points.  There was a slight scare, however, when AC cut Hwa Chong’s lead to 13-11. Hwa Chong’s match supporters were vociferous by now, as they sensed an imminent title triumph for their side. True to their supporters’ expectations, Hwa Chong’s #8 served 2 consecutive aces to win the game 15-11 and bring the trophy back to Hwa Chong for the 4th time in 5 years.

Post-match interview with players #8 Hazel Woon and #1 Xinni:

How did you feel about the victory?

We are very happy and surprised with the results, partly because we managed to overcome ACJC in a 5-setter match as they were known for their stamina.

What was it like going 2-1 down?

We were disheartened as we had made a bright start to the match. However, we have been through it before and we were usually trailing behind other matches leading to the finals. However, a rotating system kept everyone fresh and our team spirit helped keep everyone going.

What inspired the comeback?

It was a combination of factors, such as the determination of the players, depth of squad and of course, the match support.

What happened to player No.5 Cassandra?

She aggravated an old injury and suffered from a thigh cramp. After the injury, we had to have a change in formation. Fortunately, we had another experienced setter, so we were still able to play on without any trouble. I guess ACJC wasn’t expecting the new formation.

How was ACJC?

They performed up to expectations, giving us a really tough fight and pushed us to 5 sets.

Is there anything you would like to say to Hwa Chong?

I love HC and I love HCunite!

Match Report: Volleyball Guys HCI vs NYJC

May 15th, 2010 by CCA PRO

Fresh from our spirited victory over ACJC earlier, there was much anticipation and hope for a double victory for the HC volleyball team.

Set 1

High-powered serves and spikes dominated the gameplay for extended periods of time. Balls rocketed out of the court at times, nearly flying in the faces of spectators.

It was clear, however, that Hwachong was on the prowl for every point. Capitalizing on unexpected drop shots and effective blocking, NYJC was maneuvered into error-prone positions that allowed us to claw back from a score-line of 10-15 to 16-16.

After Hwachong’s equalizer at 16-16, both teams proceeded to trade point for point till the conclusion of the match. A series of frantic substitutions at the end seemed to signal a formation change of sorts on the NYJC end, but to no avail. With consistently opportunistic play, Hwachong managed to seize the set from a NYJC similarly ravenous for victory.

Set 2

We opened the scoring in Set 2 and promptly proceeded to double that lead. Good tactical play on our end saw us build up to a solid 8-2 score-line. Nanyang JC took awhile to find their groove, but managed to pull it back.

Just as in the previous set, the teams were neck to neck from hereon. Both teams upped the ante, spiking with both strength and finesse. Our team in particular displayed great spirit and mental grit. Everyone played his position excellently, contributing to a seamless team effort that saw fantastic play-setting and finishes.

At 25-25, it seemed a literal repeat of the previous set. Would we be able to continue our streak? Chenxing, our #10, jumped a superhuman height to drop a cunning shot over NYJC’s wall. Advantage Hwachong (:

Faced with immense pressure, the NYJC #13 critically blundered by spiking right into the net. The set was over; Hwachong was two sets up.

Discussing their game strategy

Set 3

Full credit goes to NYJC for putting up a solid fight despite the crushing psychological disadvantage of being two sets down. As it went, our team had to call a timeout at 1-5 down to break NYJC’s clear momentum. It worked, as NYJC served overhand into the net. Two consecutive spikes from our #7, Melvin Goh, then allowed us to pull ourselves back into the game.

The rally for Hwachong’s 22nd point was the most intense in the match. We saw volleys being traded, inspired play from both liberos, excellent defensive flow, and a definite thirst in the air. Both sides put in everything they had.

The spirit and alertness of NYJC had largely dissipated by then. Our team, sensing imminent victory, went from strength to further strength.

#7 Melvin took over the service. With a series of vicious overhand serves, NYJC was left hapless and conceded the crucial points. To leave us at match point with adrenaline pumping.

At 24-20, the crowd was rapturous for blood. Melvin delivered, with another powerful serve. NYJC, clearly ruffled by the previous shots, could do little but dive for the ball. While they managed to come into contact with it, the match had ended. The substitute bench swarmed oncourt to celebrate. The closeness and camaraderie of the team could not have been better shown than through the bold ‘CHENXING FAN CLUB’, with the flipside ‘KUANHE FAN CLUB’.

No matter, the trophy is now Hwachong’s (:

HCunite was privileged to have an exclusive (while short) interview with Yu Chenxing, HCVB’s captain in the immediate aftermath of the match. Clearly thrilled and emotional, he was hugging old pals who had come down to support him.

How do you feel about the win?

We’re all very happy, overjoyed that our efforts paid off.

Were you expecting to win in straight sets?

I guess it doesn’t matter whether you win by a lot, or by a little. What matters is that we won, with the supporters, the school and everyone else who was part of this.

Were you guys nervous ahead of the competition? We’ve heard that expectations were of a very even match.

Yup, we were quite nervous, it being our last game and all. But we did some mental preparation beforehand to calm our nerves, and we were quietly but surely confident that we’d done enough during training to clinch the title.

Is there anything you would like to shout-out through HCunite?

We’d like to thank the councilors and the supporters, for coming down even after CSM. All this, ya… The trophy belongs to Hwachong. That’s what matters.

And that concludes another exciting, adrenalin-pumping volleyball season. We all await more fantastic spiking, setting, and superb volleyball skills next year! Congratulations HC Volleyball :D

6 matches, 4 venues, 4 different sports; one thing in common: the fresh blood stains of all Hwa Chong’s opponents. In this jam-packed day filled with a handful of competitions to watch, our players have done us and Hwa Chong proud by winning all their matches. What more is there to say? Without further ado, the results are:

Volleyball Girls and Guys

It was an exciting match at the ‘A’ girls volleyball finals at the Woodlands Indoor Stadium today with Hwa Chong facing off against our traditional rivals ACJC. Despite trailing 2-1 after the 3rd game, our volleyball girls team showed their resilience and rallied around to break even to 2-2 and finally emerged as champions by winning the last set(3-2).

Fast forward an hour and a half and we have been crowned double champions! The volleyball guys won in 3 straight sets(28-26,27-25,25-20). The scores alone show how tight the match was. But every single time the pressure went up a notch, our players always ended up on top of their opponents. Congratulations Volleyball!!! Your regular training till 8-9 pm at the hall truly paid off. We are sure you will continue to make Hwa Chong proud with your hardwork and spirit. You all are part of the HC Volleyball legacy!

Basketball Girls and Guys

Emperors and empresses. Total domination/obliteration/pulverisation/(any other synonym of pwning). These are the things which ran through the minds of all the supporters who came down to cheer for our basketball girls and guys; and rightfully so. In the semi-finals of the A division, our basketballers have shown us why they are the undisputed champions year in year out. The guys started the demolition work first, winning against Victoria Junior College by 31 points. The girls ended it by winning 73-18 against Saint Andrew’s Junior College, a whopping 55 point gap! The two wins mean that both the guys and girls team are in the finals, which will be held on the 19th of May, Wednesday. If you wish to see our national champions show once again why they deserve the title, come on down and support them!

Netball

While the volleyball guys and girls were earning their points at Woodlands Statium, less than five minutes away at Republic Polytechnic, so were the netballers. The semi-finals against Raffles Institution left everyone breathless as we tried to keep up with the game, in which HC Netball eventually won 40-29, putting us through to the finals. The girls played an extremely great game today, all at their optimum level in this highly crucial match. Next Friday is the finals against ACJC. Jiayou netballers and give it your all!

Tennis Guys

The boys ended off their season on a high note with a resounding 4-1 win against VJC. You may not have won a trophy this year boys, but you definitely showed them the true hwachongian spirit! Keep it up and aim even higher next year!

Badminton Girls and Guys

In their second match of the quarter finals, our badminton guys have done us proud by bouncing back from a defeat to win resoundingly with an overall team score of 4-1 against Catholic JC. With a win and a loss under their belt, our boys need our fullest support to win the deciding match and go through to the semi finals.

However, the girls team lost 2-3 to Temasek Junior College in what was an extremely tight match. By no means did our girls lose so easily, forcing two of the games into the rubber set. Unfortunately, this match marks the end of the girls’ challenge for the coveted trophy. The girls team would like to take this opportunity to convey their sincerest gratitude to their coach, Mr Yeo, their teachers-in-charge, Mrs Ong and Mrs Sim and all the people who have supported them throughout the whole competition. Keep up the amazing work girls! You’ve made history this year by getting into the quarter finals. All eyes will be on you to bring the trophy to where it should be next year :D

Girls

First singles: Nicola Koay, 21-16, 20-22, 17-21

First doubles: Seah Jiaxin and Jiamin, 20-22, 26-24, 19-21

Second singles: Lai Kairou, 7-21, 8-21

Second doubles: Ng Eeyang and Yuanyi, 21-17, 21-13

Third singles: Chan Minhui 21-18, 21-15

Volleyball Girls and Guys

Both our guys and girls have reached the finals!!

With a 3-0(25-22, 25-9, 25-18) win over Temasek JC, the volleyball guys have made it to the finals yet again. They will be looking to retain their title this Friday against Nanyang JC at the Woodlands Sports Hall.

The volleyball girls brushed aside semifinalists Anderson JC with a comfortable score of 3-1(25-20,25-21,18-25,25-22).The third set saw AJC trying to mount a comeback, but the girls kept their cool to prevail 25-22 in the last set. Good job girls! Just one more hurdle and the trophy is yours!! The girls will be playing against ACJC at the Woodlands Sports Hall.

Tennis Girls and Guys

The tennis girls picked up where they left yesterday and won against Anderson JC with a score of 5-0. This win booked them a place in the semi-finals, which will be held on the 17th of May. The finals will be held on the 20th of May. There is no need to know when the 3rd/4th placing occurs, because our girls won’t be a part of that match. Their matches tomorrow and next Monday will determine who they will play against in the semi-finals.

The tennis boys fought their hearts out, put in all their energy in every single shot and ran for every single ball, but lost 0-5 at the hands of ACJC. This loss means that they are out of the quarter finals. Keep your heads up boys, because we all know you put in 110% to prepare for this match! All those who wish to see a literal manifestation of sweating blood are encouraged to watch their last match this Friday against Victoria JC.

Softball Girls

Our softball girls won 23-3 today against River Valley High School. Do check again soon for more updates!

Softball Guys

The match against Anglo-Chinese School Independent has been postponed to tomorrow afternoon due to the sudden downpour today. All the best to the softballers! Do catch them in action at our high school field. (:

Badminton Guys and Girls

Both teams played against Raffles Institution today and could not keep up their defense against these strong rivals, eventually losing 0-5 for both teams. It’s okay shuttlers, there will be improvements in the subsequent matches! (:

Girls:

First Singles: Seah Jiamin, 6-21, 10-21

First Doubles: Alina Tan and Lai Kairou, 12-21, 4-21

Second Singles: Chan Minhui, 10-21, 11-21

Second Doubles: Ng Eeyang and Seah Jiaxin, 11-21, 4-21

Third Singles: Nicola Koay, 13-21, 17-21

Special mention goes to Nicola who played very well against Raffles’ second seed! :D

Volleyball Guys

Facing off against traditional strong rivals from Nanyang Junior College, the volleyballers put up a tough fight, hoping to relish the win that they had last year when they met the same school in the finals. However, Lady Luck was not shining on our side as the team succumbed 1-2 with set scores of 20-25, 30-28, 23-25. The team is even more determined to gain back their losses in the next match, so do provide your utmost moral support for them. (:

Volleyball Girls

Facing Pioneer Junior College, the volleyball girls were determined to bounce back after the 2-0 loss at the hands of ACJC. Ultimately, their resilience prevailed as HCI got back to her winning ways on the court with a 2-0 (25-13, 25-9) victory in this last quarterfinals fixture for the girls team. The girls’ team will be looking to reach the coveted finals after today’s results. Do show them your fullest support! Go HCVB!

Netball

The netballers witnessed their first lost this season as they played against netball powerhouse Anglo-Chinese Junior College, losing with a score of 29-58. Efforts were definitely made to bridge the gap in the scores, and it is a commendable effort on the part of the team, considering the amazing scores they have produced in the previous matches! All the best, and hopefully the team can secure a win in their next match!

Floorball Girls

Last year’s champions Victoria Junior College met our Floorball team on the court today, and displayed their abilities and prowess over our girls by winning 6-0. Even though the floorball girls did not manage to gain any points, they definitely put in a lot of effort and had some good play during the three periods. They were even celebrating their hard work put in through the months training by shooting water guns at their captain Sarah Lim in the Central Plaza today after their match! Those who were in school were definitely infected by their contagious laughter. (: Thank you to the Floorball girls for giving us a fantastic season! We wish you all the best for next year. (:

Tennis Boys

The boys’ match against ACSI will resume play tomorrow due to the inclement weather today. Go HC Tennis!

Bowling

As the girls concluded their final day of the quartets, and the other teams from various JCs bowled their last games of the competition, the dust finally settled. Unsurprisingly, as HCBowl played their finest games in this last event, the other bowlers hailing from other schools gave their best as well. It was not soothing to hear that HC fell short of the seeded positions this year, but we can surely find solace in knowing that HCBowl has exceeded expectations in this year’s Nationals. Well done, HC Bowling!

Basketball Girls and Boys

The girls and boys basketball teams cruised to delectable wins in their 2nd fixtures of the quarterfinals. The girls defeated TJC 65-17 while the boys beat ACSI 79-34. Well done, basketball teams!

Netball

At Republic Polytechnic, the girls from the netball team emerged victorious yet again with an emphatic 77-17 victory over AJC. Great job and keep the hot streak going, people!

Volleyball Girls and Boys

The girls’ second match of the quarterfinals saw surprise package ACJC claim a 2-0 win over HCI as the volleyball team conceded the two sets 10-25, 20-25. It’s okay, volleyball, even the good teams have their mishaps once in a while. Let’s bounce back against PJC on Monday! Go Vball!

The guys team, on the other hand, managed to secure a convincing victory of 2-0 against Saint Andrews’ Junior College today, as they dominated both sets 25-8, 25-18. Next Monday they will be facing strong rivals from last year’s Finals Nanyang Junior College, and they will definitely need your support. It’s only a 10 minute bus ride down to CCAB, so do pop by and give the guys the assuring presence!

Tennis Girls

The tennis girls team continued their unbeaten run with a 5-0 win over SRJC in their first quarterfinals fixture. Terrific job, girls! The scores were as follows.

The girls from HCBowl completed their first day of the quartet events today. Tears flowed but the girls displayed great determination to complete the 3 games. They will strive hard to retain the seeded position in the last block of 3 games in tomorrow’s second day of the quartets.

The guys team pulled off a commendable performance in their 2nd and last day of the quartets despite going through ups and downs in their last set of 3 games. Congratulations to Aaron Tan of 09S62 who attained a fantastic average of 210! The boys’ team are tipped for a seeded position, and the other teams who will play their quartets tomorrow will play a key role in determining the boys’ ranking. Good luck HCBowl!

Volleyball Girls

In their first match of the quarterfinals, the volleyball girls’ team displayed excellent teamwork in downing MJC in straight sets, 25-7 and 25-8. The girls will play ACJC at 12pm tomorrow, 7th May and PJC on Monday, 10th May. Keep it going, girls!
