Match Report: Softball Guys vs ACS(I)
May 21st, 2010 by CCA PROIt was all gloom and doom the afternoon of 19th May. Gloom and doom for Anglo-Chinese School Independent, the unwitting victims of Hwachong’s rout in the ‘A’ Division Softball Finals! Having conceded a match to ACS(I) in a previous round, we were looking to avenge the loss and bring the trophy home.

Softball Whoosh

The pitch conditions at Ayer Rajah-Japanese Association of Singapore Sports Centre (AR-JAS) weren’t the best after some afternoon showers. It was more mud than grass, and we were left wondering how this might affect both teams’ performance.
The first inning was kept dead even through both halves, as both defenses kept their bases watertight. 3 of our batters were consecutively struck out, despite many accurate judgments made.

Undaunted by our failure to penetrate their defense, we moved on to the second inning. We replied with an efficient defense. While ACS(I)’s #32 managed to bat the ball, it was caught by our outfield and quickly translated to him being struck out.
Then came our turn to go on the offense. This would be the longest inning of the game, thanks to our seamless teamwork and a number of careless blunders by ACS(I).
Our first breakthrough came when our #8 Ben Oh beautifully thwacked the ball, letting #4 Wai Kuong and #2 Dom run home, and himself to 2nd base. 2-0 up. While Joel himself was called out, Ben Oh managed to capitalize on the confusion and run home. 3-0 up, with only 1 striker out.
Adrenaline pumping, our team went on to render ACS(I)’s defense hapless. A spectacular bat by #10 saw him one base from a home run, with his 3 teammates all scoring runs. The score-line now read 7-0.
Having exhausted an entire cycle of batters, #4 Lei was now up to bat again. Duly, he delivered. More runs from #2 Dominic and #8 Ben, Joel and Tommy rounded off an incredible inning.
After such a free-scoring inning, we were effectively 12-0. It was hard to see how ACS(I) would fight back.

Kudos and respect to our opponents though, for they kept their resolve to do well. They managed to score a single run on their turn to bat. Conversely, we held our defense well, even after losing our first-choice short-stop to injury (:
Heavy rain began pelting down on the already-muddy turf at the start of the bottom half of the 3rd inning, forcing match officials to postpone the match. It was highly fortunate that play could resume about an hour later. Had the match been called off, our hard-fought lead would have been reset.
Our team continued fighting their very hardest despite our more-than-comfortable lead. #6 Yizhang managed to steal second base, a risky tactic that needs an opportunistic eye and killer instinct, and went on to score a run. #10 Mousheng earned a walk and stole home due to a pitching error that saw the ball go through the catcher’s defense. Our next two batters were unfortunately struck out, leaving us 14-1 up.

We went into the first half of the second inning determined to defend our lead. We saw some spectacular defensive play. #2 Dominic stopped a fast grounder to 2nd base and fired to first base, striking the first AC batter out. Despite the occasional slip, solid teamwork covered the defense where individuals could not. We managed to contain ACSI and secure our victory.
After the 4th inning, a mercy clause was invoked. Because Hwachong was more than 10 runs up, the match did not continue into the final inning.
To keep a long story short, the final scoreline stood at 14-2, with a flurry of 12 runs scored in Hwachong’s fateful 2nd inning. Despite the abysmal conditions of the field, our supporters were clearly in high spirits by this time. We had stormed a decisive victory through.
We’re proud of you Softball (: This win makes us 5-time defending champions!

We were privileged to have an interview with the softball team:
How do you feel right now?
Fantastic. Excellent. It’s the 3rd time HC has defeated the same opponents (ACSI) in finals. This year the team was less certain of a win because we lost to ACS(I) previously this season. This led the team to become more motivated and train harder.
Could you describe your season in 1 sentence?
The journey has been long, difficult and definitely challenging. We didn’t do well for the Singapore Recreational Carnival Club Carnival. So the team became motivated to work harder to strive for better performance in the nationals.
Any words to other HC athletes?
We wish them all the best, especially for netball whose finals are on Friday! Hope they add a title to Hwachong’s collection (:
Any words of thanks?
We’d like to thank our coach, Ms Teo, and our seniors for coming down to support us for every game.

May 19th, 2010 by CCA PRO19th May, 2010. This day will go down in history as our sportsmen took Hwachong to new heights. Be it at Yishun Sports Stadium, the Ayer-Rajah field, or at ACS International, our hearts beat as one to leave a legacy. This is the power of unity, where physical distance has no bearing on the power of the Hwachong spirit. Let us take a look at the matches that left us with jaw-dropping moments:
Basketball Girls
Our basketballers did us proud. Those present at the match witnessed how we were tied with Raffles Institution at 53-53 at the end of the fourth quarter, leaving us with quickened breaths and worries of disappointment. Those worries were unfounded, as HC fought back with much tenacity during overtime. Eventually, our thirst for the championship proved more wanting. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 65-60. ‘Nuff said. We were the champions.
Basketball Guys
Following the exuberance from the girls’ match, our guys did not fail to match up. They exhibited much power in their finishes, stamping out any doubt of the world-class standard of HC Basketball. Anderson Junior College was eventually defeated by a score of 72-46. Spectators had a feast watching the strong performance of the team, and could only wow at the beauty of their play. Congrats to both the guys and girls team! Double champions, anybody?
Softball Guys
We walked onto the field with the mindset of winners, and left the field, as winners. The rain might have fallen, but never did it hint of dampening our spirits. At 12-0, the match was stopped until the skies let up. The softballers then continued to enthrall us spectators with their fantastic play, eventually giving a mightily convincing 14-2 win over Anglo-Chinese School Independent. Congratulations to the softball guys, national champions! We are proud of you:D
Tchoukball
In our first ever tchoukball tournament, this newly-formed CCA, not even a year old, did the school proud, coming in 5th. This maiden effort is extremely commendable, showing us the potential and passion that you guys have in this sport. We are so proud of you guys!! Continue striving to achieve greater heights in the years to come, and don’t ever give up. We are always behind you:D Jiayou HC Tchoukball!
1st Match: 15-20 to ACS International
2nd Match: Defeated Saint Andrew’s JC 15-2!
3rd Match: 19-24 to Anderson JC
4th Match: 20-21 to Innova JC
5th Match: 21-23 to Nanyang JC
Tennis Girls
The rain might have caused the match for the 3rd/4th placing to be postponed tomorrow, but it will certainly not put a dampener on our spirits! Jiayou HC Tennis!
Do look out for our match reports for the basketball and softball matches for more detailed descriptions as to what went on during the match! Once again, congratulations to all:) HCUNITE!

Down at Farrer Park this afternoon, the tennis girls gave their all in thee semi-finals. Unfortunately, that was still not enough for them to move on to the finals, finally losing 0-5 to Victoria Junior College. They might not have won the game according to the scoreboard, but in our hearts, they’re all winners for putting up their best fight. Do continue supporting them in their final match of the season on Wednesday for the 3rd/4th play-offs! Jiayou:D
Softball Girls
The softballers walked onto the field today knowing that this was the last chance they had this season to make their mark and let everyone feel the prowess of HC Softball. And boy did they succeed. Today’s play-offs against National Junior College for the 3rd/4th position saw HC demolish NJC with a score of 15-3, and left spectators without a doubt that we were indeed a powerful team.
The softballers would like to thank their coach and his wife for all that they’ve done for the team, be it through physical or emotional support season. The team would also like to think Miss Teo for her undying support and care for them. Finally to their male counterparts, jiayou for their game on Wednesday! With that the softbal girls season has come to a close, leaving us with many fond memories of 2010 HC Softball. HC Unite!

The match against Anglo-Chinese School Independent has been postponed to tomorrow afternoon due to the sudden downpour today. All the best to the softballers! Do catch them in action at our high school field. (:
Badminton Guys and Girls
Both teams played against Raffles Institution today and could not keep up their defense against these strong rivals, eventually losing 0-5 for both teams. It’s okay shuttlers, there will be improvements in the subsequent matches! (:
Girls:
First Singles: Seah Jiamin, 6-21, 10-21
First Doubles: Alina Tan and Lai Kairou, 12-21, 4-21
Second Singles: Chan Minhui, 10-21, 11-21
Second Doubles: Ng Eeyang and Seah Jiaxin, 11-21, 4-21
Third Singles: Nicola Koay, 13-21, 17-21
Special mention goes to Nicola who played very well against Raffles’ second seed!
Volleyball Guys
Facing off against traditional strong rivals from Nanyang Junior College, the volleyballers put up a tough fight, hoping to relish the win that they had last year when they met the same school in the finals. However, Lady Luck was not shining on our side as the team succumbed 1-2 with set scores of 20-25, 30-28, 23-25. The team is even more determined to gain back their losses in the next match, so do provide your utmost moral support for them. (:
Volleyball Girls
Facing Pioneer Junior College, the volleyball girls were determined to bounce back after the 2-0 loss at the hands of ACJC. Ultimately, their resilience prevailed as HCI got back to her winning ways on the court with a 2-0 (25-13, 25-9) victory in this last quarterfinals fixture for the girls team. The girls’ team will be looking to reach the coveted finals after today’s results. Do show them your fullest support! Go HCVB!
Netball
The netballers witnessed their first lost this season as they played against netball powerhouse Anglo-Chinese Junior College, losing with a score of 29-58. Efforts were definitely made to bridge the gap in the scores, and it is a commendable effort on the part of the team, considering the amazing scores they have produced in the previous matches! All the best, and hopefully the team can secure a win in their next match!
Floorball Girls
Last year’s champions Victoria Junior College met our Floorball team on the court today, and displayed their abilities and prowess over our girls by winning 6-0. Even though the floorball girls did not manage to gain any points, they definitely put in a lot of effort and had some good play during the three periods. They were even celebrating their hard work put in through the months training by shooting water guns at their captain Sarah Lim in the Central Plaza today after their match! Those who were in school were definitely infected by their contagious laughter. (: Thank you to the Floorball girls for giving us a fantastic season! We wish you all the best for next year. (:

The boys’ match against ACSI will resume play tomorrow due to the inclement weather today. Go HC Tennis!

The netball team added another win to their perfect season record as they beat SAJC 62-27. Congratulations to the netball team for their wins and their unstoppable form!
Softball Guys
Playing against Tampines Junior College today, our softballers only let slip one point to their opponents, accomplishing yet another fantastic win with a score of 17-1. Indeed a commendable performance by the softballers, especially so for their consistent track record!
Badminton Girls
It was indeed an EPIC WIN today for our female shuttlers, a deeply gratifying and exhilarating success story that is definitely going to be told to the subsequent generations of shuttlers to come ..
Facing off against Anglo-Chinese Junior College today which was a life-and-death situation determining the critical entry of the badminton team into the second round, the team was apprehensive about the outcome, and was on tenterhooks as they prepared to leave the school to board the bus heading for Tampines Sports Hall. Previously, ACJC played an extremely close match against Meridian Junior College (which our girls lost to 1-4), and ACJC lost by a small margin of 2-3. It was predicted that the match between HCI and ACJC would be an extremely close one too, and the winner of the match would obviously proceed into the next round.
YET, the team was faced with numerous challenges and obstacles today, starting from the moment they stepped out of school ..
1. There was no bus to transport the players.
2. There was a slight drizzle.
3. It started to rain cats and dogs when the players stood outside school to hail taxis.
4. The girls were drenched from head to toe in the rain, desperately hailing for taxis as the taxi drivers seemingly took our players to be invisible.
5. The team only made it JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME before the match began at 2.00pm.
First Singles: Seah Jiamin
With little time for warm-up and stretches, Seah Jiamin, representing Hwa Chong as our first singles, stepped into the court to face an all-ready Yumiko Tan from ACJC. The moment the match started, they were locked in an intense battle to clamour for the first important point for their team. The scores were drawn very close to each other, and they eventually had to play the rubber set to determine the ultimate victory. Throughout her game, Jiamin remained intently focused and calm, reading her opponent carefully, and found the Archille’s Heel of her opponent – to attack the with strong punches and lobs to her forehand, and finishing the shot with a sharp net/ smash to her backhand. This tactic proved to be highly effective, and Jiamin achieved the first point for her team.
Overall Score: 2-1
First Doubles, Seah Jiaxin and Chan Minhui
Hoping to continue her twin sister’s achievement, Jiaxin and doubles partner Minhui went to court and definitely intimidated their opponents with their powerful attacking punches and killer smashes. The opposite pair also maintained their teamwork and spirit by constantly encouraging and high-fiving each other, but our girls were undaunted and unleashed their formidable powers against them. Special mention goes to Minhui, who displayed great tenacity, not giving up on any balls but give her all and pushing herself to reach for the shuttle that might have seem like a few yards away. She made many wonderful saves which shocked the opponent and hence could not be received. Jiaxin also performed smart and tricky moves, for example, hitting the ball in the opposite direction where her opponent was running.
Overall Score: 2-0
Second Singles: Nicola Koay
It was almost a leisure game for Nicola, who met the third singles from ACJC. Her opponent failed to reach the standards of our top seed player, and this being so, Nicola had ample chances and opportunities to display her elegant shots, moving gracefully to each ball and finishing them off with either a killer smash, or a toppling ball so sharp over the net, her opponent had great difficulties receiving. The match was over in a short while, as compared to the previous two matches, proving Nicola’s capabilities as a proficient singles player. Well done Nicola!
Overall Score: 2-0
Second Doubles: Ng Ee Yang and Low Yuan Yi
Even though ACJC gave the Hwa Chong team a shock by putting their first singles Jasmine to play doubles, so as to strengthen and increase the probability of winning the point, our doubles pair was unaffected by this, and played their best match since the season started. Captain Eeyang definitely set a good example to the team, with her resilience and perseverance in reaching out to all the balls that were delivered by her opponents, and even though some of the shots were attacking strokes, she managed to turn the tables around and changed from defensive to offensive, ultimately tapping the shot down to earn the point. Yuan Yi on the other hand, with her amazing height to great advantage, constantly brought the ball down so steeply to the ground, that they gained many consecutive points based on this. Throughout the game there was intricate partnership and understanding between the two, and this defnitely contributed to the good game played by the duo today.
Overall Score: 2-0
Third Singles: Lai Kairou
Representing her team in the final match of the day, Kairou also had the strong desire to win within her, giving her opponent some difficult backhand shots and sharp drops over the net. Excellent footwork was displayed by Kairou as she moved to receive the shots easily, and countered them with her powerful shots. It was an obvious win in this case for Kairou, as she proved dominant over her opponent and swept both sets easily.
Overall Score: 2-0
Since a long time to come, probably since the establishment of Hwa Chong in 1974 (the team reckons .. ), the badminton girls have finally made it into the TOP 8, which is an incredible feat achieved by the team thus far. Even though the team was blighted with unfavourable weather conditions at the start, and had to manage their nerve problems worrying about the match against ACJC, they eventually ousted the other school with their strong passion and desire for the win today. It is indeed the best match played today, with an astounding 5-0 win over ACJC. Well done girls and congratulations in getting into the TOP 8! Hwa Chong is soooo proud of every one of you. (:

Our girls’ squash team have clinched the National 3rd placing after beating ACSI 5-0 in the 3rd/4th placing match.
Playing the last match of their season and giving this finale a superb touch by achieving a fantastic winning score of 3-0 each, the female players for today are:
Gladys Kee
Alicia Tee
Hannah Lee
Mao Shihui
as well as Chua Hui Ying
Well done, girls! For next year, we’ll get that title!
Netball
The netball team staged another tremendous win at Republic Polytechnic, this time over CJC, with a scoreline of 93-17! Great job, and continue with the streak, Netball!
Tennis Boys
The match away at SRJC was in Hc’s favour as we were 2-0 up in the team score before it was stopped and postponed to Thursday morning, 29th April, when it will resume and hopefully conclude on the same day. Bag another win for HC, tennis boys! All the way!
Softball Girls
The heavy rain has caused the softball match versus Victoria Junior College to be postponed to tomorrow, 3.00pm, and will be held in Hwa Chong’s home ground. Do lend the girls your support and give your voice boxes a little exercise by cheering them on after lessons tomorrow!
Touch Rugby Girls
The girls’ finals against Jurong Junior College has also been postponed due to bad weather, and will be held tentatively on Friday. Do keep your ears and eyes peeled for more confirmation of match details!
Badminton Boys
After experiencing the tragedy of losing to ACJC in their first match, the shuttlers have rebounded and came back even stronger, and now relish in their 4-1 triumph over Millenia Institute.
1st Singles: Lim Jie Rong
Despite nursing numerous leg injuries, Jie Rong managed to overcome his pain and took the match 2-0 in a very hard-fought match against MI’s best singles player. He definitely demonstrated his ability to turn the tables around by overcoming a 4-point deficit at 12-16 in the second set, unelashing a streak of 9 straight points which allowed him to clinch victory and earn the valuable first point for the team.
1st Doubles: Lee Keng Boon and Ray Tan
The doubles pair made short work of their opponent and displayed their dominance on the court by sweeping the match 2-0. With their win, Hwa Chong was 2-0 ahead of their opponents!
2nd Singles: Chong Kai Ren
Kai Ren played relatively well in his first match of the tournament and triumphed 2-0, giving the team’s valuable third point and hence the affirmation of the win over MI
2nd Doubles: Lucas Lim and Nigel Ang
Rare cases of mistakes and merves meant that the pair dropped the first set narrowly. They came back strongly in the second set, however, and brought the game to a decider match in the third set. However, the nervous factor crept in again and they lost the last set by a narrow margin too. Wonderful effort nonetheless by the J1 pair.
3rd Singles: Lim Rui Jin
Playing one of his best games yet, Rui Jin defeated MI’s second singles player 2-1. Even though he lost the first set, he came back motivated and stronger, taking home the next two sets, with a narrow score of 21-19 in the final set. Despite being down 17-19, Rui Jin mustered his strength and gave it his all, managing to clinch the next 4 points and score a valuable victory over his friend from MI.
The shuttlers will be playing their crucial match against SAJC on Friday, who managed to defeat MI 4-1 too. The odds are on Hwa Chong to win, but support is still much needed for the guys to triumph in this must-win match. So Hwa Chong peeps, do keep the guys motivated by giving them your utmost support!
Basketball Girls
Playing against the school with much similarities in our uniform look, Nanyang Junior College, our basketballers showed who was superior by dominating the court and bringing a huge 50-point difference of 62-12 in today’s match. Well done girls!
Bowling
In the Guys’ Team Doubles Event today, special mention goes to Magnus Lim of 10S75 reached the upper band rankings with an overall average of 201. The school team is still in good contention for the 3rd/4th seeded placing which will depend on the Quadruples next Wednesday and Thursday. The bowling guys’ squad will be looking to break out of the underdog status and strive for the seeded status. All the best for HCBowl’s upcoming fixtures!
Floorball
It was just not HC’s day for the floorball teams as the girls lost 1-3 to MI, while the guys held a commanding 3-0 lead in the first period, but suffered a late comeback by RVHS, losing the match 3-4. We’re halfway through the 1st round, and we wish the floorball teams all the best and all the luck they need! Cheer up, these few matches are for us to prove ourselves. Go Floorball!

26th April saw HCBowl vying for supremacy in the singles event for the men’s category, and the boys from the HC Bowling did well to contend for the 3rd/4th seeded position for this year’s bowling Nationals. The placing also depends on the upcoming doubles and quadruples matches. (Check out the dates of the competition in the Bowling Season Preview!) Special mention goes to Loh Jun Yan of 09S7H who bowled a high game of 256.
Today, the girls took part in their singles events, and the highest average from the team came from Eunice Kho who bowled an average of 172. Similarly, the girls’ team are in contention for the top seeded positions, which depends on the upcoming doubles and quadruples as well. Let’s wish the bowling team all the best for their Guys Doubles Event which is taking place tomorrow!

2nd Doubles: 9-2
3rd Singles: 9-7
Well done girls! Their next match will be at home ground against CJC on the 4th of May. Let’s wish them all the best!
Badminton Girls
Our female shuttlers headed for Tampines Sports Hall for their maiden match of the season today against Meridian Junior College, and after fighting hard to gain the upper hand in the sets which eventually concluded by a mere difference of a few points, they eventually lost the game 1-4 to the school boasting of more skilled players.
First Singles: Nicola Koay
First to represent her team in the competition arena, Nicola’s coverage of the court was excellent and she executed some really cool cross-court smashes! The first set was a really close fight but the point went to MJC as Nicola lost 18-21. The game was ended after her powerful Chinese opponent claimed the second set too, winning 2-0 and obtaining the first point for the opponent team.
First Doubles: Chan Minhui, Seah Jiaxin
