MAD Moderners: Barcelona Dance Awards

April 13th, 2010 by CCA PRO

In the annual prestigious Barcelona Dance Awards Competition held from 31st March to 6th April 2010, M.A.D. Modern Division has done the school proud and clinched top prizes! Specifically, 2 trophies: BEST CHOREOGRAPHY and BEST ETHNIC DANCE! :D

Having 7-hour practices at least 3 times a week in December and March holidays and going through at least 6 months of gruelling and rigorous training, this has definitely paid off all the hard work and effort that we have put in.

Here is a gist of the journey that the moderners went through in Barcelona…

Thursday:

At the airport. Thank you to all the seniors, juniors, friends and family who sent us off at the airport, and for all the support and well-wishes!

We touched down on Thursday, and our competition date was on Friday, so we had to book a function room and have practice!

The floor was cold and hard, making it very hard to dance on, but the moderners persevered on! (:

Friday: COMPETITION DAY!

The coach that we will be taking to get to the theatre (:

While waiting for our coach, we stole a picture with Anderson Junior College’s Modern Dance group, who was there for the Barcelona Dance Competition as well (:

Everyone stretching and warming up after reaching the theatre, keeping ourselves prepared for our timeslot for the competition.

The view from our holding room… Breathtaking (:

Our neo-classical dance piece performed by 5 dancers was up first.

Our second competition piece was a modern-chinese contemporary dance piece, performed by 31 dancers. It was already 1 a.m. by the time it was our turn to perform this piece, as we were the second last competition item on the schedule! All the dancers were exhausted, but when it was our time to take on the stage, we put on our best performance!

Moderners with our lovely teachers and instructor (:

Saturday:

The moderners took the day off after the competition date to do some Barcelona shopping! We had to take a terminal bus to the metro station, before we could reach the city of Barcelona.

The bus terminal

Sunday:

Today was MAD Modern’s last chance to perform our competition piece. It was a performance, where each school/organization would showcase one of their dances. We showcased our modern-chinese contemporary piece (: The performance was followed by the Prize-giving ceremony.

On stage receiving our prize (:

Moderners with Mr. Dan, exhilarated upon receiving 2 trophies (:

And here’s a close-up at our trophies!

With the other dance teams from Singapore: Anderson Junior College and Singapore Chinese Girls’ School.

Everyone filled with smiles while freezing in the cold, waiting for a coach to take us back to our hotel.

Monday:

On our last day in Barcelona before taking the flight back to Singapore, we went sight-seeing! Barcelona’s architecture is just so magnificent. (: Truly an awesome experience.

At the La Sagrada Familia, designed by Gaudi and still under construction

 Tuesday:

Taking the flight back home.

Wednesday:

Home sweet home!

M.A.D. Modern 2010 would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people:

Dr Hon, Mrs Chin, Mr Chan and the school administration for giving their utmost support for this trip.

Mr Dan Kwoh, our instructor and choreographer, for giving us priceless guidance along the way, helping each and everyone of us to bloom into better dancers, and for choreographine such a great dance piece.

M.A.D’s Teacher-in-charge, Miss Chen Phi Fern, for all her eforts in organizing this trip and making it possible.

Our teacher chaperone, Miss Tan Ai Lay, for taking care of us during the trip.

Civics and subject tutors for their continuous support for the moderners, and putting in extra effort to help us catch up with our work.

The Chinese Dance instructor, 杨老师, for giving us constructive comments and assistance.

M.A.D. Hiphop and Bboy divisions for their unwavering support all these while.

M.A.D. Alumni for their encouragements and guidance.

Where did MAD’s Moderners go to?

April 1st, 2010 by CCA PRO

From 31st March till 7th April 2010, M.A.D. Modern Division will be heading to Barcelona to participate in the Barcelona Dance Awards 2010!

Barcelona Dance Awards is an annual dance competition held in Barcelona, Spain. It has established itself as an extremely significant and prestigious aspirant-dancing event in Europe. This valuable experience will serve to boost the cultural exchange between Singapore and Europe, through dance. New friendships will be forged, a better understanding of different cultures will be attained and greater exposure to the Arts scene in Barcelona.

The modern dancers will be performing 2 items there: a Modern-Chinese Contemporary dance piece, and a neo-classical dance piece. Having undergone rigorous dance training since the December Holidays, the dancers really hope to be able to do the school proud, so please do show your support in one way or another for your fellow schoolmates! It will definitely be greatly appreciated (:

Had Some POPpin’ Good Fun?

February 16th, 2010 by CNY Committee

Hey Hwa Chong! Hope you’ve spent the break well resting and gearing up for the rest of the school term (and collecting those precious Ang Baos)! Time to recount the events on your last Friday!

12th February was definitely a day of joy and excitement. With our very own Hwa Chong Chinese New Year Celebration, 花舞, attracting the young and the slightly older ( sorry seniors) alike in a fit to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Citygate: CANDY with a tinge of manga.

But in any case, students and seniors alike decked the corridors of the wings and 天堂, adding to the touch of liveliness the day presented.

The morning was packed with exciting performances courtesy of our Lion Dance, Choir, Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Dance Society and the Music And Dance Society and Wushu!

Our emcees: Xueyan & Zeyu

HC Choir completes the SMILE! Don’t you see one!

HC Chinese Dance at their best again

With a pleasantly surprising performance from our Music And Dance Society!

Wushu: the valour package.

Make that a precision and top-class one as well. :D

With the street market following the performances, Hwa Chongians experienced a festival that is worth remembering in every right.

A fair wih the undiscounted creativeness of our students.

The mass Lao Yu Sheng was the highlight of the event, with everyone crowding around their own class benches ( or stalls) and lo hei for a more prosperous new year. The FEEL of Hwa Chong family was in everyone’s bones.

Go, teachers!

CNY Celebration, 花舞, came to a splendid end with the sun beaming brightly on the red tiger in the middle of central plaza, casting a brilliant shadow of Red, Blue, Green and Yellow.

We could not ask for a more apt build-up as the atmosphere paved the way for the explosiveness of what was to come:

POP 2010!

One by one each faculty immersed themselves in 3 minutes of bliss, giving full vent to their dazzling moves, drawing incessant cheers from the entire plaza and wings.

Ahh-hooooot!!!

Bullgirls and bullguys unite!

Ahh-whoooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Dancing God of War

The best faculty may have been crowned by our judges, but you guys know that the best dance is one that entails soul and sweat. You did it, together, J1s!

What’s a party without SODACHE?! Here we go again! Get you mind set, and have a wild, wild time!

The very vibrancy of our school.

One Hwa Chong, as always, and forever!

HCI MAD @ Tapestry 2009!

July 28th, 2009 by CCA PRO

TAPESTRY

It was Masterful And Daring.
It was Magical And Dazzling.
It was Mind-blowing And Drop-dead-dope.
It was our very own Music And Dance Society!

The HCI MAD rocked the familiar hot-spot in town on the 18th of July, Saturday, bringing a spectacular showcase out to the streets. Greeted by a large and enthusiastic crowd at Orchard Road, the 20-minute long performance was well-received by shoppers and passers-by who couldn’t help but stopped and stared, to relish in the intriguing and intoxicating sensation.

The performance comprised a fusion of Hiphop, Popping, Locking, Lyrical Hiphop, Street Jazz and Break-dance, and the 3 divisions came together to bring our audience a smashing good time of eye-feast that evening. Our dancers danced to the pulse of the music, and the rhythm in their souls.

Tapestry is an annual busking event in which participating bands and dance crews would hit the streets to exhibit their artistic talents. This year, the J1 MAD dancers took part, trained hard, danced their hearts out, and made an impression. Next year, I’m sure they’ll be back again.

MAD also greatly appreciates all seniors, friends and family who were present to lend their support. :D

Check our performances on video!!!

AYG2009 Opening Ceremony!

July 6th, 2009 by CCA PRO

On 29th June 2009, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, 6200 spectators witnessed the zest of the youth of our multi-cultural continent, illustrated in a visual extravaganza, also known as, the 1st Asian Youth Games (AYG) Singapore 2009 Opening Ceremony.

Over 1,000 students from the primary and secondary schools, the junior colleges and the National University of Singapore participated in the performance segment of the ceremony. Even ushers were made up of students from various schools.

The show segment boasted three exhilarating mass items titled “Garden in the City”, “Asia’s Zest” and “Spirit of Evolution”.
And in case you didn’t know, our very own Modern Dance division from the MAD Society were performers in Spirit of Evolution!

Dancers from NUS

Roller Bladers pulling some breath-taking stunts.

The only item performed by primary school students, Garden in the City

Fantastic, artistic display.

Spirit of Evolution, featuring dancers from Deyi Secondary School, Henderson Secondary School, Hwa Chong Institution (College), National Junior College and Serangoon Junior College, and cadets from NCC Air

Not forgetting, Team Singapore!

Shooter Jasmine Ser, kegler Remy Ong and swimmer Tao Li lights the AYG fire.

And our dearest VIPs/Ministers.

And you! If you were there, witnessing a proud moment for all the performers and athletes.

It’s BACK AGAIN!

May 26th, 2009 by CCA PRO

Last year, they awed you with their moves and shook the stage.
They promised to return the next year.

THIS year, they’re BACK AGAIN!!! The Chinese Dance Society and the Music and Dance Society have collaborated as they have for the last 4 years to bring you more than an hour of thrills, adrenaline, and slick moves that blew you away. They’ve rehearsed, again, and again, and again; they’ve probably spent hours visualizing their moves on bus trips, in their sleep, and they’ve sweat it out in studios, over weeks of preparation, just to bring you, Hwachong’s very own…

DANCE NIGHT 2009

This year, all performances/items are linked together by a ficitonal account of two HC lovebirds.

With the dances suggesting a local and Hwachong context, the performances were very much close to heart.

Remember the female voice on the MRT PA system?

Presenting… the grace and elegance of the Chinese Dance Society.

You’ll never play alone, or swim alone, for that matter.

And let your dreams carry you on.

Ohhhhhh. A rose speaks a thousand painful words.

At peace.

Now we know what students do during detention.

Emotionally arresting.

The costumes and formations never fail to astound us.

Featuring… the breakin’ scene in Hwachong!!!

Their efforts were never in vain, as our audience savoured and appreciated every moment of it.

All pumped up.

Looks like we’ve bred some talented JabbaWockeeZ in Hwachong!

One more time. With flair.

And an exuberant finale to sum up the night.

Whether you were with your besties, BFFs, boyfriends, girlfriends, bros, sisters, papa, mama, teachers, or random schoolmates, there was never a doubt about the atmosphere, and what it promised to deliver. From the day the announcement was made on the bridge, from the time you filled up your CT order forms, to the stuffy entrances you made into the auditorium, everyone was prepared to immerse themselves in the spirit of dance.

Well, we can’t possibly leave out our on-stage couple, can we? Yes, emphasis on ON-STAGE.

To all supporters, students, guests from other schools, and teachers, and principals, we thank you for making this possible. Even the numerous, ever-resourceful and ever-enthusiastic crashers are to be commended for their unwavering support.

Many thanks to our dedicated photographers who spent the nights snapping away for our viewing pleasure, especially Zhong Wei and Daryl for supplying the photos for this article!

Of course, not forgetting our heroes behind the scenes: Mr Dan Kwoh, AnAn, Felix Huang, Ms. Yang JingFeng and Ms Chen Phi Fern! Last but not least, the AVA personnel and lightings I/Cs! Your expertise and professionalism was what made this possible!

This year, they delivered.

Next year, they’ll be BACK AGAIN!!!

Season Preview: MAD

March 24th, 2009 by CCA PRO
Music and Dance Society (MAD) is a dance society set up back in 1974, and has evolved with the times, through different forms to its current form. Currently, it comprises 3 divisions, namely Modern, Hip-hop, and Break. Our Modern Division has always achieved excellent results for the Singapore Youth Festival, and this year, it will be breaking new grounds, performing at the inaugural Asian Youth Games (AYG) Opening Ceremony in June. Participation on local dance competitions such as FUYO Inter-School 3v3 bboy championships, as well as Danceworks!, a local dance competition to raise awareness of the harms of drugs. We have also performed a charity event Tapestry, for a few years, as well as school events such as Open House and Teachers’ Day.
Boasting probably the best instructors around in Singapore in their respective genres, with Bboy Felix Huang as the instructor for the Break Division, Mr Dan Kwok as the instructor for the Modern Division, as well as An An from O School, for the Hip-hop Division. Currently, the aims for MAD are simple: to foster a group of dancers who are knowledgeable about every genre of dance, as well as to bring every dancer closer together so that we forge strong relationships with one another. As MAD continues to grow bigger in size, we strive to improve our standards and at the same time, creating opportunities for dancers from different genres to get to know one another better and thus appreciate other genres of dance as well.

This year, the Music and Dance Society promises to bring you more surprises, as it prepares for an all-new Dance Night 2009, a concert show held annually in collaboration with Chinese Dance since 2006. More details will be released soon, so do keep a lookout for Dance Night 2009 in Term 2!
