Canoeing: Club Crew World Championship in Macau
August 12th, 2010 by CCA PROOn 26 July, the Hwa Chong canoeing team headed for the Club Crew World Championship held in Macau. This trip was the first time the team has competed overseas, and promised to be an eye-opener for them. Over the course of four days and ten grueling races, the team took home not only medals, but more importantly, invaluable experience and fond memories.

The team went through much training in preparation for this trip. There was a good mix of cardiovascular, strength and dragonboat trainings in order to prepare the team for this competition. Although the trainings were both physically and mentally demanding, it was all worth it in the end as we went for the competition.

The first race of the competition was the mixed 20-crew 2000m event which the team did not perform up to standard for. However, the team bounced back by putting up a good fight in the Mixed 20 Crew 200m event, eventually coming in first. They went on repeat their good showing in the Mixed 20-Crew 500m, bettering their personal best.

After the races, there was a combined training with National Junior College and we saw how our traditional rivals worked. It was an eye-opener for us as we have limited interactions with other teams. We learnt that good sportsmanship builds friendships through competition.
There was also the celebratory dinner, where all the competitors gathered to rest and relax after the races. We had the chance to interact with teams from other countries such as Russia, Australia and China. It was interesting as we learnt more about people from different cultures. We also got to taste food from different countries such as New Zealand ice cream.

We faced some challenges while preparing for the CCWC. It was the first time many of us have paddled. Hence, we were both inexperienced and not physically strong as compared to most of the other paddlers. We also had no idea about many of the technical aspects of paddling. Fortunately, with the aid of our coach and teachers-in-charge, we were able to solve these problems before we left.

This trip has taught us much about ourselves. Firstly, we learnt that hard work pays off. The countless demanding trainings we endured before Macau paid off as we reaped the rewards.
At the beginning, there were many doubts as to whether we could achieve anything at the competition as our competitors were much more experienced and bigger than us. However, after our competition, we realized that we could actually hold our own against them, which boosted our morale and gave us more confidence.

We believe this trip would prove to be an important stepping stone for next year’s National School’s Canoeing Championships as we aim to bring glory to our school next year. As many of us were inexperienced, it provided us with valuable competition experience that would aid our growth as a competitive canoeist. We were to able to improve our focus and discipline as a team, and the competition also made us all mentally stronger while forging a more bonded team.

Hot Off the Press: Squash Boys Semifinals, Canoe, Tennis Boys, Basketball, Volleyball Boys, Soccer Boys, Rugby
April 23rd, 2010 by CCA PROAs the schooling week comes to a close, our sports teams will no doubt wish to end a gruelling week on a high note, and these fixtures were a perfect avenue for appropriate venting. Alas, these guys did not disappoint as HC was propelled towards greater things after today.
Squash Boys SEMIFINALS
The boys’ squash team walked into the Kallang Squash Centre Court 2 with zero complacency, expecting a tense encounter with ACS(I). After the girls’ team’s loss at the hands of Raffles, their boys counterparts were even more determined to bring home the championship title. Our boys played with sheer will and composure, emerging victorious with a 4-1 win despite falling behind after the first match.
The lineup was as follows:
Ryn Wu 0-3
Darren Toh 3-0
Jason Ho 3-0
Alex Lim 3-0
Bryan Seow 3-0
Having gained entry into the finals, the squash team will give their 200% to be crowned champions. Do support the boys in every way you can in their most crucial fixture of the season!
Canoe [Dragon Boating]
Today, our canoeing team emerged NATIONAL CHAMPIONS for the A Division in the 10th National Schools’ Dragon Boat Championship 2010! This simply demonstrates HCanoe’s prowess in the canoeing scene this year, and possibly in the many years to come. What an amazing feat, guys! We’re immensely proud of you! Check out the Hall of Fame for their accolades!
Volleyball Boys
The volleyball guys met Serangoon Junior College today and displayed tremendous skill by sweeping both sets easily with a score of 25-5, 25-3. Well done!
Tennis Boys
The tennis team faced little challenge today as they produced another 5-0 win, this time over visitors MJC. The boys will face SRJC at their home ground on the 28th of April. All the best, HC Tennis!
Basketball Girls
First match into the season and our basketball girls unleashed their merciless streak, showing who owned the court by scoring a whooping 96-5 against Yishun Junior College. Watch out, people, the game has only just started! Amazing feat accomplished by our girls today! You girls certainly can challenge the boys’ team’s records! (:
Basketball Boys
The basketball boys continued their spotless record with a 67-33 win over Temasek JC at the Singapore Basketball Centre today. The significant decrease in the point gap of the scoreline compared to previous matches can only mean that the season is heating up faster than we can imagine. Go boys! Continue to do us proud!
Soccer Boys
Having won their last group match against AJC, the ultimate progress of the team depended on AJC’s last match. Over the course of this week, the soccer team had their fingers crossed, duly hoping AJC would do HC a favour by winning their match by a goal. When news of the final score broke out, where AJC won 2-1, the soccer team could not have been happier this season. HC is proud of you for making it further than any previous team! Dominate that 2nd roun match, boys!
Rugby
The HCI vs CJC match is again postponed due to heavy rain, this time to Monday, 26th April. Go boys!

Competition Report: Canoe
April 18th, 2010 by CCA PROOver the course of the second week of April (6th – 9th), the Hwa Chong Canoeing Team participated in the National Inter-School Canoeing Championships, vying with traditional powerhouse NJC as well as homeground hosts SAJC. With 8 national championship titles won within the last nine years for NJC, the very momentum of history was against team Hwa Chong. Despite so, the Hwa Chong Canoeing team has not disappointed, and has returned home as champions for ‘A’ Boys and National 4th for ‘A’ Girls!
KAYAK DIVISION
In the K1 500m/1000m events which saw 3 out of the six finalist from the national team, our finalists, Mervyn Toh Yingjie from 09S63 staved off all challengers from the field of competitors to take home both gold medals, while Loh Yi Cheng from 09A10 willed himself to take into a podium finish for the 1000m event coming in third and came in 5th for the 500m event.

Mervyn facing virtually no competition

Yi Cheng
Our K2s added to our tally of 20 points, with the potent combination of veteran paddler Oon Shui Kun O9S78 and talented new-comer Lim Swee Kiat 09S62 managing to come in 4th for both events to extend the lead created by our K1s.

K2 buddies Shui Kun & Swee Kiat
For the critical K4 events, our K4 crew consisting of Seet Qin Hong from 10S6C Yong Fen Yit from 10S70 Lim Kai Tick from 09S6A and backman Jonathan Chong from 09S75 displayed excellent teamwork and coordination to deny then closest rival SAJC from a podium finish, eventually taking home the bronze for 1000m and the silver for the 500m.

K4 hotties: Qin Hong, Fen Yit from, Kai Tick and Jonathan Chong
CANOE DIVISION
Finalist Wong Shen Nan despite suffering from a back injury one one week prior to the competiton, displayed tremendous showmanship to take home 4th position in the C1 1000m finals.

Shen Nan: 2nd from right, miniscule from this view but impactful nonetheless.
Newcomers Alfred Lua and David Lim overcame the odds to come in 5th for the C2 1000m event and 6th place in the C2 500m events.

Eat our dust!!!
In the similar C2 events, the combination of team Captain, Cao Zhe Hou and Vice Captain Daniel Soo rose to the occasion, taking home the silver for both C2 500m as well as C2 1000m.

Daniel & Zhe Hou displaying paramount teamwork
By the conclusion of the above events, Team Hwachong had established a substantial lead over SAJC. However, we did not lose our focus, determined not only to win but to better NJC’s championship tally of 51 points last year.
Hotshot canoeist, YOG athlete Loo Kee Wei fulfilled our dreams by his contribution in his C1 500m finals allowing Hwa Chong edge over NJC by a mere one point.

YOG athlete Kee Wei
With a combined score of 52 points, the canoeing team is proud and extremely exhilarated to have finally clinched top honors, bringing home the championship trophy after a nine year drought.
Our K2 Pair Aw Yu Xuan and Wu Di who competed in the K2 1000m event and Noah Chong and Roy Quek in the K2 500m event paddled hard and managed to qualify for the semi finals as well. A special mention goes out to other members of the team, Khaw Xuan Cheng, Teo Ee Nam Ng Yong Boon and Ng Jun Ying who have contributed an equal effort to the team championship.

From left: Yu Xuan, Jun Ying.
A’ GIRLS
In the similar national interschool canoeing championships, the Hwa Chong Canoeing Girls Team has shown considerable promise in obtaining a team placement, 4th this year.
Despite fierce competition in her k1 events, Rachel Quek managed to obtain 5th and 4th position in the 1000m and 500m finals respectively.
In the T1 500m event, Lim Yi Xian came in a honourable 5th and K2 Pair Tan Hui Shan and Toh Jia Le fought their way into the finals for the k2 500m event eventually coming in 6th.
Our K4 girls Qitian, Sandy, Xin Fang and Chuin Yin managed to come in 5th in the k4 500m event as well.

K4 girls giving their all.
The canoeing girls team this year has done well and has laid the foundation for an even higher placing in the years to come. We would like to again thank all our Coaches Markus, Yosef, Fiona and Kaiwen and teachers in charge Mr Quek, Ms Tan and Mr. Heng.
We would definitely not have come so far, particularly with so many new paddlers without the help of the following people: Head Coach and Hwa Chong canoeing alumni, Markus Lim Yi Shou, and Assistant Coaches Yosef Effendy, Kai Wen and Fiona.
As well, Ho Hin Yang our senior and coach from the class of 2008 whose dedication, constant encouragement and ingredient X helped us achieve what we thought was impossible.
Chen Ji Zhou, team secretary whom often had to take charge of administrative duties and whose contribution to the team is invaluable.
We would also like to thank teachers in charge, Mr. Quek Wee Tong who often went belong the call of duty to organize and manage the team, allowing us to focus on our training as well as Ms Tan Ai Lay and Mr. Justin Heng for logistic help. Last but not least we would like to thank the school, Dr. Hon, Mrs Chin and Mr Chan for their unwavering support and continued faith in the canoeing team to allow us to achieve such results!

HC CANOE '10

The Hwa Chong Canoeing Team will row our hearts out in lieu of next year’s Nationals and strive for greater results.
But we’ll still remember to take those hard-earned breaks to recuperate and paddle even harder!

Featured Athlete Of the Week: Mervyn Toh
April 17th, 2010 by CCA PROHey HC, your featured athlete for the 2nd week of April (4th – 10th) is MERVYN TOH YINGJIE (09S63) !
Your CCA PROs interviewed Mervyn after the conclusion of the Canoeing Nationals on the 9th of April to gain more insights on his contributions to the team’s golden harvest this year and his journey as a canoeist over his last 5 years in Hwa Chong.
This year, Mervyn overcame all odds and produced a string of awe-inspiring results as a consistent K1 paddler.
He came in 1st for all the following events of the various competitions held this year:
17th Jan: Singapore Canoe Marathon – K1 Junior Men
27th & 28th March: MR 500 - K1 500m
13th & 14th of March: National Junior Canoeing Championship - K1 1000m & K1 500m
9th of April: Canoeing Nationals Finals - K1 1000m & K1 500m
Here goes the questions!
1) The two gold medals you earned for your Nationals definitely did not come without sacrifice. How do you feel about your achievements?
I’m very grateful to my teachers, coaches, seniors, teammates and juniors who have supported me. Winning those two events has been a goal of mine since 2008 and I’m glad I could contribute to the team.

Mervyn receiving one of his medals for his Nationals
2) The canoeing team’s efforts leading up to this season are undeniably immense. Physical training aside, how do you prepare yourself mentally for competitions?
Competitions can be pretty frightening. I try to get myself excited by watching races of other sporting videos. Participating in a competition is much more enjoyable when you’re excited and not intimidated.

The hard-earned A Division title!
3) Your grades never fail to cause jaw-dropping effects. Tell us more about how you balance your academic commitments and your canoeing activities!
I make it a point to pay attention during lectures and tutorials and do my homework. I find that doing so saves time spent on revising, so I can get through the tests and assignments by studying one or two days before. Of course, staying awake can sometimes be an uphill task (CT sessions…).
4) No pain, no gain. Were they any major setbacks you faced thus far? Like injuries for example? How did you make the comeback?
I contemplated changing CCAs at the end of Secondary 4 because I thought my time could be better spent elsewhere. But quitting didn’t feel right. I came back quickly because I had to fulfill my commitment to the Canoeing team after signing up in Secondary 1. Many people change CCAs when they get to JC, and I hope more will continue with their original CCAs to strengthen our Hwa Chong teams.

6) To many people their CCA mates mean the world to them. Any shout-out to your teammates and fellow HC athletes?
My teammates are a cool bunch of people (mostly). One runs very fast, one is crazy, one is extremely dark-skinned, one is elite, one has an endless supply of food; among the rest there are different people who look like a hamster, a peach, a dinosaur, Mickey Mouse and an earthworm. But they’re still great.
