Featured YOG Athlete: Jabez Su

August 12th, 2010 by CCA PRO

Some of you might have seen him dribbling down the basketball court during the school nationals earlier this year; some of you might have seen him walking along the corridor; some of you might have seen him as part of the contingent running with the torch-bearers this morning. This Youth Olympic Games, see him, Jabez Su, playing for Singapore in the 3-on-3 Boys Basketball.

HCunite scores an exclusive interview with Jabez!

1. When did preparation for YOG begin? Any highs or lows thus far?

We participated in the recent AYG in 2009. Our trainings started at the beginning of 2009 so as to prepare ourselves for the upcoming YOG and AYG back then. AYG was indeed a rich experience for us as we battle the best teams in Asia. We were also quite satisfied with our results and performance. A short break was awarded so as to allow the members to prepare for their major exams. Immediately after these exams, we were back to training almost 5-6 times a week till today. There were quite a few of training tours and preparation games prepared for us as well.

2. In RedsportsV, an online poll for the best 5 B Division players in Singapore, last year, you received the highest number of votes!! Any comments on this?

Thanks for those who had high hopes in me!

3. You’ve been in a number of basketball teams – Catholic High, Hwa Chong, YOG, among others. What are the challenges you face in adapting to the styles of different teams, and how do you overcome them?

YOG and the other teams are played in different format and rules. The YOG game was designed in a way that it became a faster paced 3on3 game, hence limiting the game strategies. The challenge to adapt into this team’s style will be adapting to the game rule and format.

As we progress in terms of basketball, we tend to switch teams frequently. My main challenge will be adapting to the playing style of these teammates and living up to the coach’s expectation on court.

4. What words of encouragement do you have for your fellow athletes who have hopes of taking part in such a major competition in the future?

When speaking about basketball, I guess we Singaporeans are always at a physical disadvantage when we compete internationally. However, stay confident and play hard. I guess this applies to all other sports as well.

5. Anything you want to say to your fans on HCunite?

Thank you very much!!

Match Report: Basketball Girls HCI vs RI

May 22nd, 2010 by CCA PRO

Gut-wrenching, heart bursting, jaw-dropping. It is a match that people should only watch once so as to prevent themselves from any fatal injuries arising from the countless ups and downs during the game. The sheer _____(there really is no word to describe the feeling) that everyone in the sports hall was feeling, that is assuming we still had our senses after such a close match, was out of the world. It truly is the ‘Finals’, Singapore basketball’s very own ‘Clash of The Titans’.

1st quarter

HC started off with a burst of energy and wasted no time settling into the game. Within 1.45mins, they had scored 5 points from #10 Amelia and #6 Wei Yi, and had forced Raffles to call for a timeout to break our girls’ rhythm. That trick turned out to be a magic pill, as a  3 minute battle for possession followed. Nothing was going to stop our girls, as they forced RI to a foul. The resulting free throw saw #10 Amelia fully capitalising her chances, taking an 8-0 lead. It seemed as if Hwa Chong was going to win this one with one eye closed. Luckily RI, being our arch rivals, stepped their game up and showed us their worth. A flurry of attacks saw RI take a shock 3 point lead(8-11) that silenced all the Hwa Chong supporters. Deep down supporters were already sensing an upset was about to occur right in front of us. This doubt was partially cast away (prematurely), as our basketball girls closed the gap to 10-12 with less than 20 seconds left on the clock.

2nd quarter

Our girls came back with one goal in mind: to get back all the points that they lost during the 1st quarter. That was exactly what they did, outplaying and outrunning the RI players all around the court. Just like the 1st quarter, the HC basketball girls wasted no time getting a foothold on the game. 30 seconds into the game, the combination of #6 Wei Yi, #11 Sara and #13 Ee Ling perfectly executed a routine link play that awed everyone with its simplicity and effectiveness, resulting in 2 points that leveled the score at 12-12. The pendulum was slowly shifting towards our side.

Just a minute later, #11 Sara defies the laws of physics and jumps way above her taller marker to catch a rebound, before putting the icing on the cake with an equally mind-boggling shot out of nowhere. Shots continued to rain down and rattle RI’s rim, punishing them each time by widening the point gap. So helpless were the RI players by the beautiful free flowing game that our basketball girls were playing that all they could do was helplessly run and watch as Hwa Chong overturned a 2 point loss to a 5 point lead by the end of the 2nd quarter.

3rd quarter

The third quarter was dejavu to the supporters as Hwa Chong and RI were neck to neck fighting for each and every point.  45 seconds into the game, #11 Sara jumps a superhuman height to block her opponent’s goal bound shot. The RI offence continued to pile up pressure on the HC defence line, who waited patiently for a chance to go on the counter attack. That chance came after a full minute of defending. The HC girls won a rebound and immediately passed forward to #4 Cherylin, who outran everybody and easily converted the first 2 points of the 3rd quarter for Hwa Chong. That marked the end of Hwa Chong’s impenetrable fortress of a defence as RI scored 5 quick points, splitting the game wide open.

What followed was a rarely seen free flowing game emphasised solely on offensive maneouvres. The result was 5 minutes of continuous shooting and scoring. If those 5 minutes weren’t exciting enough, the last 2 minutes would definitely have satisfied everyone’s craving for some action.  #8 Nicole starts it off by intercepting a pass and sprinting past her oncoming marker before scoring 2 points for Hwa Chong. 10 seconds later #4 Cherylin showed her prowess in reading the game by intercepting an RI pass and scoring another 2. Count another 10 seconds and you’d have seen RI score a 3 pointer. Before you could even look around and internalise everything that was happening, the Hwa Chong girls had already hit RI back with a 3 pointer of their own. In a bid to slow down the exhausting pace of the game, the RI ranks decided to call for a timeout for the sake of the players from both teams.

Instead the pace reached a critically high level, resulting in #11 Sara who’s contribution to the match was undoubtedly vital in keeping Hwa Chong in the title race, to get injured. As she got back up and limped back to the bench, the whole Hwa Chong crowd stood up to cheer her on in hopes of her making a quick recovery.  That anti-climax seemed to slow the match down, as the last minute of the 3rd quarter only saw 3 points being scored, all by RI. The score at the end of the 3rd quarter was 35-33 to Hwa Chong Institution.

4th quarter

The performance of a team during a game is usually associated with the last quarter, as it leaves the most lasting impressions on viewers. This 4th quarter is fully justifies why. If the 1st quarter saw RI narrowly edge HCI out, the 2nd saw HCI run wild and the 3rd saw RI outscoring HCI yet again, then the 4th quarter would have been a tug of war between the two teams, each one so close, yet so far away from the championships. That was exactly what it was like. RI started the 4th quarter by scoring 8 unanswered points, silencing the Hwa Chong crowd that was simply electrifying just a minute ago to say the least.

With 8 minutes of regular time left in the finals, Hwa Chong were down by an all time low of 7 points. It is moments like these that differentiate the champions from the rest. Its a rite of passage that all winners have to undergo to truly become a champion. Hwa Chong challenged this moment, and they succeeded. #6 Wei Yi took the liberty of starting the come back, scoring 2 points with 7 minutes left to play. The rest of the team too gave their all. For every point that RI scored, our girls whipped back with double the points. With 3 minutes left on the clock, Hwa Chong was still down by 3 points. Fast forward past a great intercept by #13 Ee Ling and dead accurate shooting by #7 Eva and #11 Sara, and Hwa Chong were suddenly back up by 3 points at 50-47.

They extended their lead to 5 points with 1 minute left in the game. Hwa Chong’s victory celebrations were cut short, as our archrivals finally made their come back as well. Within 50 seconds, RI scored 5 points to tie the game 53-53. The last 10 seconds saw Hwa Chong trying to go for the win, but a turnover resulted in a shot by RI that went in. Fortunately, it was ruled out because they had shot after the buzzer had gone off, forcing the game into over time.

Overtime!!!!!!!!!

Forget whatever was said about the last quarter being the face of the whole game, because this is the real deal right here. A whole year’s worth of hard work, countless litres of sweat, blood and tears shed, all hinging on these 5 minutes of over time. Undoubtedly both RI and HCI are deserving champions based on their performance so far, but our basketball girls proved to be the champions this time round, as they kept their cool and showed everyone how the one true champion fights to the very end. The 1st minute of OT was nerve wrecking as RI took a 3 point lead. But then again, we are talking about Hwa Chong basketball girls here. Did they really think it was going to end like that? Obviously not. Our girls scored a 3 pointer and did some other stuff that no one was able to remember(including the reporters) because of how intense those last 3 minutes were, and finally emerged as champions 65-60!

It has been a great season for our basketballers. Their determination and spirit today was unrivalled, and their desire to win it edged RI by just that much. Yes RI, we are proud to call you our archrivals. But today is our day. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for bringing the best out of each and every one of our basketballers, and for keeping our rivalry strong as ever.

Match Report: Basketball Guys HCI vs AJC

May 21st, 2010 by CCA PRO

With a twist, a jump and a flick of the wrist, the HC guys basketball team have once again brought the trophy back home to Hwa Chong. Maybe it was the fact that they’ve been champions for God knows how long, maybe it was because they trained to their very best and perfected all their moves, maybe it was because they did not feel intimidated by AJC, maybe it was simply because of the fact that they were wearing a jersey imprinted with the words Hwa Chong Basketball. Whatever it was, they looked like champions right from the start. Nearly 400 J2 students came down to Yishun Sports Hall, with many J1s rushing down right after school to catch a show that was simply too appealing to resist.

1st Quarter

AJC shocked the whole stadium by going full throttle earlier, scoring 6 unanswered points within 3 minutes. Enter the emperors. With 6.35 left in the clock, #15 Justin opens HC’s scoring account with a 2 pointer. Exactly 30 seconds later, #11 Yuan Ming twists one way and jumps the other way in an inhuman fashion to get rid of his marker, then shoots to close the gap to 2 points. 15 seconds and 4 free throws later and the scoreboard read HC 7-6 AJC. The rampage did not seem to stop there, as a razor sharp pass split the whole AJC defence line into 2 to reach #11 Yuan Ming, who converted with ease to extend HC’s lead. HC’s forays to their attacking half continued, with #7 Zhou Kai, #8 Henry and #13 Subhas all chipping in to raise the score. At the end of the 1st quarter, the score was 23-11. Our basketballers were well on their way to another championship win.

2nd quarter

Knowing that they needed to step up and play their game, AJC came back with renewed energy, and did not hesitate to start the game immediately after the break. Full credit goes to the AJC team for equalling our basketballers in nearly every department during the 2nd quarter. A frantic start saw both teams committing fouls and AJC outscoring HC by 3 points. Bring in the tower. With 6.40 left on the clock, #5 Russell Low leaps high above the rest to catch a rebound and shoots to score 2 points for HC. With 5.56 left, #5 Russell steals the ball and shoots another 2 points. AJC was not going to go out without a fight, scoring two consecutive 3 pointers within a minute to close the gap to 8 points. Their resilience and hard work was met with raucous cheers by the AJC supporters. A moment after the restart and everyone was looking up as #6 Ee Ruey throws a full court pass that reaches #4 Jabez’ hands, who lays up and scores 2 points to restore a sense of calmness amongst the HC ranks. A 2 minute goal drought ensued, but both teams more than made up for it, with AJC scoring a beautiful 3 pointer that everyone could only stare and watch, and HC scoring 5 points to continue extending their lead. The end of the 1st quarters saw the score at 41-28.

3rd quarter

The 3rd quarter saw fatigue creeping into the AJC camp. Boy, did our extremely fit athletes capitalise on their opponents’ weakness. Not only did they open the floodgates once again, they also prevented AJC from scoring for the first half of the 3rd quarter. By then, our #4,5,6,7,8 and 13 all had scored at least 2 points. With 4.54 left on the clock, AJC finally scores a point through a free throw. That seemed to spark something off, as #4 Jabez dribbles past the whole AJC team and shoots to score another 2 points. With 3.46 left, #13 Subhas mesmerised the crowd with his flawless reading of the game, intercepting pass after pass made by the AJC players. The unusually high tempo of HC’s game proved to be too much for AJC’s number #14 to handle, as he was fouled out for committing one too many violations. That marked the end of all the 3rd quarter action, with Hwa Chong once again above her opponents going into the 3rd quarter 54-31.

4th quarter

The one-sided affair had to change if they wanted to ensure that the A division finals would be seen as a ‘finals’, a clash of the titans. That was exactly what happened, as both teams dominated the court during different periods of the last quarter. The HC team executed a series of textbook passes that discombobulated the whole AJC team. 1 minute into the last quarter, #5 Russell again leaps over everybody to catch the rebound, before landing on the ground and immediately springing back into the air to score 2 points that left all the AJC players rooted to the ground. AJC stood firmly to the ground, and responded with just as much verve as HC whenever they were under attack. However, with 6 minutes left in the game, a lethal partnership was born. #4 Jabez and #5 Russell, along with the support of their teammates, went rampant, scoring HC’s next 10 points, finally extending HC’s lead once again. With less than 3 minutes left in the game, the score was 72-36, Hwa Chong had scored double the points AJC had scored. Yet AJC continued to fight on. They pulled off a series of accurate shots from all around the court to score 9 consecutive and unanswered points within 2.5 minutes,  testament to why they too deserved to be in the finals.

As the buzzer rang, the score once again was in favour of Hwa Chong. The cheers of the crowds from both sides signified a perfect end to the 2010 A Division Guys Basketball Competition. Though we were clearly physically and technically better than all the other teams, we could learn a thing or two from teams like AJC, who’s spirit matched, if not surpassed ours, during the last basketball game of the season. And so their winning streak continues…..

Hot Off The Press: Basketball Guys and Girls, Softball Guys, Tennis Girls, Tchoukball

May 19th, 2010 by CCA PRO

19th May, 2010. This day will go down in history as our sportsmen took Hwachong to new heights. Be it at Yishun Sports Stadium, the Ayer-Rajah field, or at ACS International, our hearts beat as one to leave a legacy. This is the power of unity, where physical distance has no bearing on the power of the Hwachong spirit. Let us take a look at the matches that left us with jaw-dropping moments:

Basketball Girls

Our basketballers did us proud. Those present at the match witnessed how we were tied with Raffles Institution at 53-53 at the end of the fourth quarter, leaving us with quickened breaths and worries of disappointment. Those worries were unfounded, as HC fought back with much tenacity during overtime. Eventually, our thirst for the championship proved more wanting. When the final whistle blew, the scoreboard read 65-60. ‘Nuff said. We were the champions.

Basketball Guys

Following the exuberance from the girls’ match, our guys did not fail to match up. They exhibited much power in their finishes, stamping out any doubt of the world-class standard of HC Basketball. Anderson Junior College was eventually defeated by a score of 72-46. Spectators had a feast watching the strong performance of the team, and could only wow at the beauty of their play. Congrats to both the guys and girls team! Double champions, anybody?

Softball Guys

We walked onto the field with the mindset of winners, and left the field, as winners. The rain might have fallen, but never did it hint of dampening our spirits. At 12-0, the match was stopped until the skies let up. The softballers then continued to enthrall us spectators with their fantastic play, eventually giving a mightily convincing 14-2 win over Anglo-Chinese School Independent. Congratulations to the softball guys, national champions! We are proud of you:D

Tchoukball

In our first ever tchoukball tournament, this newly-formed CCA, not even a year old, did the school proud, coming in 5th. This maiden effort is extremely commendable, showing us the potential and passion that you guys have in this sport. We are so proud of you guys!! Continue striving to achieve greater heights in the years to come, and don’t ever give up. We are always behind you:D Jiayou HC Tchoukball! :)

1st Match: 15-20 to ACS International

2nd Match: Defeated Saint Andrew’s JC 15-2!

3rd Match: 19-24 to Anderson JC

4th Match: 20-21 to Innova JC

5th Match: 21-23 to Nanyang JC

Tennis Girls

The rain might have caused the match for the 3rd/4th placing to be postponed tomorrow, but it will certainly not put a dampener on our spirits! Jiayou HC Tennis!

Do look out for our match reports for the basketball and softball matches for more detailed descriptions as to what went on during the match! Once again, congratulations to all:) HCUNITE!

Match Report: Basketball Girls vs SAJC

May 16th, 2010 by CCA PRO

12 girls, 40 minutes, 4 quarters. Two words: simply unstoppable. It was not 10, not 30, not 50. It was a 55 point difference. Our basketball girls ripped their opponents SAJC into pieces, winning by a gap the size of Grand Canyon.

1st quarter

The first quarter saw a slow start, with both teams unable to score. After 3 minutes, Sara (#11) picked up a rebound and shot to draw first blood. With 6:25 left on the clock, Eva (#7) made a great charge forward to score another 2 points. She went on another successful charge with 5:36 left to score her 4th point. The clock showed 5:20 when SAJC finally made their first shot attempt. It seemed as if our girls wanted to keep a clean sheet in a game where 100 points was not uncommon, as they completely shut their opponents for the rest of the match and scored another 10 points. At the end of the 1st quarter it really seemed like a 0 point game for SAJC, as they were down 16-0.

2nd quarter

SAJC came back with renewed energy, as they started to string their passes better and made some good tactical maneuvers to confuse our defence.  Their hard work paid off as SAJC finally broke away from ground zero with 8:44 left in the 2nd quarter. A 2 minute power struggle ensued, as both teams tried to beat their opponents tactically. The end of it saw Cherylin (#4) exhibit a deft turn and score a 3 pointer that left her marker rooted to the ground. Another one sided affair was expected by many, but SAJC did very well to keep their cool and play on par with our basketballers. Both teams ended the 2nd quarter evenly matched, as our girls scored 15 points and SAJC scored 13. The score was now 31-13.

3rd quarter

Hwachong went into the 3rd quarter with no intention of letting their opponents play their game. Not only did they do exactly that and prevented their opponents from scoring for the whole of the 3rd quarter, but they were impeccable on the offence as well. Their actions showed that they were physically and technically leagues above than their opponents. With 6:55 left in the 3rd quarter, Cherylin (#4) ran from one end of the court to the other to score a lay-up. At 5:18, Captain Wei Yi (#6) steals the ball from the opponent and outruns everyone to add 2 points to the score line. The last 4 minutes saw Cherylin, Lynn and Sara own the court as they added 17 of the 26 points in the 3rd quarter. The score was now 57-13.

4th quarter

The game was pretty much over by the start of the 4th quarter, but our girls decided not to rest on their laurels just yet. The opponent started off the better side by scoring 5 unanswered points. Eeling (#13) started to control the game, constantly intercepting and stealing the opponents’ passes and harassing them up and down the court. Her hard work was met with dead-accurate shooting by her teammates.

The final score at the end of the match was 73-18. With this win, our girls have booked a place in the finals. Do stay tuned for next week’s preview to find out the timings and locations of their last match!

6 matches, 4 venues, 4 different sports; one thing in common: the fresh blood stains of all Hwa Chong’s opponents. In this jam-packed day filled with a handful of competitions to watch, our players have done us and Hwa Chong proud by winning all their matches. What more is there to say? Without further ado, the results are:

Volleyball Girls and Guys

It was an exciting match at the ‘A’ girls volleyball finals at the Woodlands Indoor Stadium today with Hwa Chong facing off against our traditional rivals ACJC. Despite trailing 2-1 after the 3rd game, our volleyball girls team showed their resilience and rallied around to break even to 2-2 and finally emerged as champions by winning the last set(3-2).

Fast forward an hour and a half and we have been crowned double champions! The volleyball guys won in 3 straight sets(28-26,27-25,25-20). The scores alone show how tight the match was. But every single time the pressure went up a notch, our players always ended up on top of their opponents. Congratulations Volleyball!!! Your regular training till 8-9 pm at the hall truly paid off. We are sure you will continue to make Hwa Chong proud with your hardwork and spirit. You all are part of the HC Volleyball legacy!

Basketball Girls and Guys

Emperors and empresses. Total domination/obliteration/pulverisation/(any other synonym of pwning). These are the things which ran through the minds of all the supporters who came down to cheer for our basketball girls and guys; and rightfully so. In the semi-finals of the A division, our basketballers have shown us why they are the undisputed champions year in year out. The guys started the demolition work first, winning against Victoria Junior College by 31 points. The girls ended it by winning 73-18 against Saint Andrew’s Junior College, a whopping 55 point gap! The two wins mean that both the guys and girls team are in the finals, which will be held on the 19th of May, Wednesday. If you wish to see our national champions show once again why they deserve the title, come on down and support them!

Netball

While the volleyball guys and girls were earning their points at Woodlands Statium, less than five minutes away at Republic Polytechnic, so were the netballers. The semi-finals against Raffles Institution left everyone breathless as we tried to keep up with the game, in which HC Netball eventually won 40-29, putting us through to the finals. The girls played an extremely great game today, all at their optimum level in this highly crucial match. Next Friday is the finals against ACJC. Jiayou netballers and give it your all!

Tennis Guys

The boys ended off their season on a high note with a resounding 4-1 win against VJC. You may not have won a trophy this year boys, but you definitely showed them the true hwachongian spirit! Keep it up and aim even higher next year!

Badminton Girls and Guys

The Anglo-Chinese School Independent guys proved themselves as strong opponents, and our badminton guys lost 0-5. However, they never once gave up and kept on fighting regardless of the strong competition.  The girls team played Victoria Junior College today, and was unfortunately unable to overcome the strong challenge posed by the VJ team. Despite a loss of 1-4, the camaraderie of the team was still evident, showing the true spirit of HC Badminton and their camaraderie. Special mention goes to Minhui for playing one of her best matches in the entire tournament (:

Tennis Guys

The continuation of the tennis match today saw the guys fight hard, but finally succumbing to strong competition from Anglo-Chinese School Independent, with an eventual score of 1-4. Those who witnessed the match will agree that our guys fought their hardest. Good job, guys! (: We’re proud of you.
