Badminton Girls and Guys

In their second match of the quarter finals, our badminton guys have done us proud by bouncing back from a defeat to win resoundingly with an overall team score of 4-1 against Catholic JC. With a win and a loss under their belt, our boys need our fullest support to win the deciding match and go through to the semi finals.

However, the girls team lost 2-3 to Temasek Junior College in what was an extremely tight match. By no means did our girls lose so easily, forcing two of the games into the rubber set. Unfortunately, this match marks the end of the girls’ challenge for the coveted trophy. The girls team would like to take this opportunity to convey their sincerest gratitude to their coach, Mr Yeo, their teachers-in-charge, Mrs Ong and Mrs Sim and all the people who have supported them throughout the whole competition. Keep up the amazing work girls! You’ve made history this year by getting into the quarter finals. All eyes will be on you to bring the trophy to where it should be next year :D

Girls

First singles: Nicola Koay, 21-16, 20-22, 17-21

First doubles: Seah Jiaxin and Jiamin, 20-22, 26-24, 19-21

Second singles: Lai Kairou, 7-21, 8-21

Second doubles: Ng Eeyang and Yuanyi, 21-17, 21-13

Third singles: Chan Minhui 21-18, 21-15

Volleyball Girls and Guys

Both our guys and girls have reached the finals!!

With a 3-0(25-22, 25-9, 25-18) win over Temasek JC, the volleyball guys have made it to the finals yet again. They will be looking to retain their title this Friday against Nanyang JC at the Woodlands Sports Hall.

The volleyball girls brushed aside semifinalists Anderson JC with a comfortable score of 3-1(25-20,25-21,18-25,25-22).The third set saw AJC trying to mount a comeback, but the girls kept their cool to prevail 25-22 in the last set. Good job girls! Just one more hurdle and the trophy is yours!! The girls will be playing against ACJC at the Woodlands Sports Hall.

Tennis Girls and Guys

The tennis girls picked up where they left yesterday and won against Anderson JC with a score of 5-0. This win booked them a place in the semi-finals, which will be held on the 17th of May. The finals will be held on the 20th of May. There is no need to know when the 3rd/4th placing occurs, because our girls won’t be a part of that match. Their matches tomorrow and next Monday will determine who they will play against in the semi-finals.

The tennis boys fought their hearts out, put in all their energy in every single shot and ran for every single ball, but lost 0-5 at the hands of ACJC. This loss means that they are out of the quarter finals. Keep your heads up boys, because we all know you put in 110% to prepare for this match! All those who wish to see a literal manifestation of sweating blood are encouraged to watch their last match this Friday against Victoria JC.

Softball Girls

Our softball girls won 23-3 today against River Valley High School. Do check again soon for more updates!

Badminton Girls and Guys

The Anglo-Chinese School Independent guys proved themselves as strong opponents, and our badminton guys lost 0-5. However, they never once gave up and kept on fighting regardless of the strong competition.  The girls team played Victoria Junior College today, and was unfortunately unable to overcome the strong challenge posed by the VJ team. Despite a loss of 1-4, the camaraderie of the team was still evident, showing the true spirit of HC Badminton and their camaraderie. Special mention goes to Minhui for playing one of her best matches in the entire tournament (:

Girls

First singles: Nicola Koay, 19-21, 15-21

First doubles: Ng Eeyang and Yuanyi, 14-21, 17-21

Second singles: Chan Minhui, 21-19, 21-17

Second doubles: Alina Tan and Seah Jiaxin, 10-21, 11-21

Third singles: 5-21, 18-21

Basketball Girls and Guys

Both guys and girls continued their unbeaten run in today’s matches. For the girls, it was an intense game this afternoon against Raffles Institution. We managed to maintain our lead throughout the game, and eventually prevailed with a score of 36-26. The guys team stormed to a 85-38 win over Anderson Junior College this afternoon as well. Good job, and jiayou for your respective matches on Friday!

Tennis Guys

The continuation of the tennis match today saw the guys fight hard, but finally succumbing to strong competition from Anglo-Chinese School Independent, with an eventual score of 1-4. Those who witnessed the match will agree that our guys fought their hardest. Good job, guys! (: We’re proud of you.

Tennis Girls

Due to the rain, the tennis match will be postponed to tomorrow. We are all behind you, girls. Jiayou!

Softball Guys

The match against Anglo-Chinese School Independent has been postponed to tomorrow afternoon due to the sudden downpour today. All the best to the softballers! Do catch them in action at our high school field. (:

Badminton Guys and Girls

Both teams played against Raffles Institution today and could not keep up their defense against these strong rivals, eventually losing 0-5 for both teams. It’s okay shuttlers, there will be improvements in the subsequent matches! (:

Girls:

First Singles: Seah Jiamin, 6-21, 10-21

First Doubles: Alina Tan and Lai Kairou, 12-21, 4-21

Second Singles: Chan Minhui, 10-21, 11-21

Second Doubles: Ng Eeyang and Seah Jiaxin, 11-21, 4-21

Third Singles: Nicola Koay, 13-21, 17-21

Special mention goes to Nicola who played very well against Raffles’ second seed! :D

Volleyball Guys

Facing off against traditional strong rivals from Nanyang Junior College, the volleyballers put up a tough fight, hoping to relish the win that they had last year when they met the same school in the finals. However, Lady Luck was not shining on our side as the team succumbed 1-2 with set scores of 20-25, 30-28, 23-25. The team is even more determined to gain back their losses in the next match, so do provide your utmost moral support for them. (:

Volleyball Girls

Facing Pioneer Junior College, the volleyball girls were determined to bounce back after the 2-0 loss at the hands of ACJC. Ultimately, their resilience prevailed as HCI got back to her winning ways on the court with a 2-0 (25-13, 25-9) victory in this last quarterfinals fixture for the girls team. The girls’ team will be looking to reach the coveted finals after today’s results. Do show them your fullest support! Go HCVB!

Netball

The netballers witnessed their first lost this season as they played against netball powerhouse Anglo-Chinese Junior College, losing with a score of 29-58. Efforts were definitely made to bridge the gap in the scores, and it is a commendable effort on the part of the team, considering the amazing scores they have produced in the previous matches! All the best, and hopefully the team can secure a win in their next match!

Floorball Girls

Last year’s champions Victoria Junior College met our Floorball team on the court today, and displayed their abilities and prowess over our girls by winning 6-0. Even though the floorball girls did not manage to gain any points, they definitely put in a lot of effort and had some good play during the three periods. They were even celebrating their hard work put in through the months training by shooting water guns at their captain Sarah Lim in the Central Plaza today after their match! Those who were in school were definitely infected by their contagious laughter. (: Thank you to the Floorball girls for giving us a fantastic season! We wish you all the best for next year. (:

Tennis Boys

The boys’ match against ACSI will resume play tomorrow due to the inclement weather today. Go HC Tennis!

Match Report: Badminton Guys vs TJC

May 6th, 2010 by CCA PRO

Playing against Temask Junior College, our shuttlers overcame all odds and clinched eventual victory with a score of 3-2.  It was a must-win match for both schools as victory would ensure qualification for us, while TJC had to top it up with a subsequent victory at SAJC to enter the 2nd round. Tension started building and soon the game got underway.

First Singles: Lim Jie Rong

In a bid to maintain his 100% record, Jie Rong played superbly against an opponent usually featured in the doubles. Our shuttler took the 2 games easily and gave us a winning start.

Overall Score: 2-0

First Doubles: Lucas Lim & Nigel Ang

Up against the 1st doubles pair of TJC, it proved to be a really tough match for our J1 pair. Despite pur valiant efforts, the opponents proved to be too strong given their strong smashes and fighting spirit and took the game in straight sets to level the score up at 1-1.

Overall Score: 0-2

Second Singles: Chong Kai Ren

Kai Ren was up against a much taller player, the first singles player Joel from TJC. This was a crucial match for a victory would swing the lead to the school that of the victorious player. Both started the game well and scores were tight all the way, before a couple of unforced errors gave the first set away to Joel at 21-17. The 2nd set didnt go as well for Kai Ren, for the drift in the court led to more errors, and Joel managed to claim victory. TJC was leading 2-1.

Overall Score: 0-2

Second Doubles: Lee Keng Boon & Ray Tan

A loss would hand victory to TJC, and our J2 pair knew that very well. They went into the match fully fired up and managed to control their opponents very well, capitalizing on every attack and took advantage of the unfamiliar pair from TJC. Our pair thus took the 1st set comfortably. However, nerves started to settle in in the 2nd set, but match experience and control allowed us to claim victory with a score of 21-18 in the 2nd set. Score tied at 2-2

Overall Score: 2-0

Third Singles: Lim Rui Jin

The deciding game was between the 2nd best singles player of both schools, and both were motivated to play their best to claim victory for their respective schools. In his favourite spot of 3rd singles, Rui Jin was excellent in the 1st set, controlling his opponent and took the game 21-12. However, a couple of errors at the start of the game allowed the TJC player to lead by a couple of points which spelled trouble for Rui Jin. Our player kept his cool and managed to claw his way back, point by point to decrease the deficit. However, it was the TJC player that reached 21 first, while Rui Jin fell a little short with his 19 points. It was down to the deciding set of the decider game. Taking advice from our coach, Rui Jin changed his strategy slightly and played excellently. Nerves started creeping in towards the end of the game and both players started making uncharacteristic errors too. With a change in his serves and superb judgment, Rui Jin managed to score more points and finally took the last game 21-17. Victory for Rui Jin meant that we won the match 3-2 and we were through to the 2nd round !

Overall Score: 2-1

The 2nd round consists of the top 8 schools out of the original 20, and the 8 would be allocated into 2 groups, with each having 2 who finished 1st in their groups in the 1st round, and 2 who finished 2nd in their previous round. Chances may appear slim for us, but the draw may do us favours. We’ll try our best and fight for the glory of Hwachong !

Netball

The netball team added another win to their perfect season record as they beat SAJC 62-27. Congratulations to the netball team for their wins and their unstoppable form!

Softball Guys

Playing against Tampines Junior College today, our softballers only let slip one point to their opponents, accomplishing yet another fantastic win with a score of 17-1. Indeed a commendable performance by the softballers, especially so for their consistent track record!

Badminton Girls

It was indeed an EPIC WIN today for our female shuttlers, a deeply gratifying and exhilarating success story that is definitely going to be told to the subsequent generations of shuttlers to come ..

Facing off against Anglo-Chinese Junior College today which was a life-and-death situation determining the critical entry of the badminton team into the second round, the team was apprehensive about the outcome, and was on tenterhooks as they prepared to leave the school to board the bus heading for Tampines Sports Hall. Previously, ACJC played an extremely close match against Meridian Junior College (which our girls lost to 1-4), and ACJC lost by a small margin of 2-3. It was predicted that the match between HCI and ACJC would be an extremely close one too, and the winner of the match would obviously proceed into the next round.

YET, the team was faced with numerous challenges and obstacles today, starting from the moment they stepped out of school ..

1. There was no bus to transport the players.

2. There was a slight drizzle.

3. It started to rain cats and dogs when the players stood outside school to hail taxis.

4. The girls were drenched from head to toe in the rain, desperately hailing for taxis as the taxi drivers seemingly took our players to be invisible.

5. The team only made it JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME before the match began at 2.00pm.

First Singles: Seah Jiamin

With little time for warm-up and stretches, Seah Jiamin, representing Hwa Chong as our first singles, stepped into the court to face an all-ready Yumiko Tan from ACJC. The moment the match started, they were locked in an intense battle to clamour for the first important point for their team. The scores were drawn very close to each other, and they eventually had to play the rubber set to determine the ultimate victory. Throughout her game, Jiamin remained intently focused and calm, reading her opponent carefully, and found the Archille’s Heel of her opponent – to attack the with strong punches and lobs to her forehand, and finishing the shot with a sharp net/ smash to her backhand. This tactic proved to be highly effective, and Jiamin achieved the first point for her team.

Overall Score: 2-1

First Doubles, Seah Jiaxin and Chan Minhui

Hoping to continue her twin sister’s achievement, Jiaxin and doubles partner Minhui went to court and definitely intimidated their opponents with their powerful attacking punches and killer smashes. The opposite pair also maintained their teamwork and spirit by constantly encouraging and high-fiving each other, but our girls were undaunted and unleashed their formidable powers against them. Special mention goes to Minhui, who displayed great tenacity, not giving up on any balls but give her all and pushing herself to reach for the shuttle that might have seem like a few yards away. She made many wonderful saves which shocked the opponent and hence could not be received. Jiaxin also performed smart and tricky moves, for example, hitting the ball in the opposite direction where her opponent was running.

Overall Score: 2-0

Second Singles: Nicola Koay

It was almost a leisure game for Nicola, who met the third singles from ACJC. Her opponent failed to reach the standards of our top seed player, and this being so, Nicola had ample chances and opportunities to display her elegant shots, moving gracefully to each ball and finishing them off with either a killer smash, or a toppling ball so sharp over the net, her opponent had great difficulties receiving. The match was over in a short while, as compared to the previous two matches, proving Nicola’s capabilities as a proficient singles player. Well done Nicola!

Overall Score: 2-0

Second Doubles: Ng Ee Yang and Low Yuan Yi

Even though ACJC gave the Hwa Chong team a shock by putting their first singles Jasmine to play doubles, so as to strengthen and increase the probability of winning the point, our doubles pair was unaffected by this, and played their best match since the season started. Captain Eeyang definitely set a good example to the team, with her resilience and perseverance in reaching out to all the balls that were delivered by her opponents, and even though some of the shots were attacking strokes, she managed to turn the tables around and changed from defensive to offensive, ultimately tapping the shot down to earn the point. Yuan Yi on the other hand, with her amazing height to great advantage, constantly brought the ball down so steeply to the ground, that they gained many consecutive points based on this. Throughout the game there was intricate partnership and understanding between the two, and this defnitely contributed to the good game played by the duo today.

Overall Score: 2-0

Third Singles: Lai Kairou

Representing her team in the final match of the day, Kairou also had the strong desire to win within her, giving her opponent some difficult backhand shots and sharp drops over the net. Excellent footwork was displayed by Kairou as she moved to receive the shots easily, and countered them with her powerful shots. It was an obvious win in this case for Kairou, as she proved dominant over her opponent and swept both sets easily.

Overall Score: 2-0

Since a long time to come, probably since the establishment of Hwa Chong in 1974 (the team reckons .. ), the badminton girls have finally made it into the TOP 8, which is an incredible feat achieved by the team thus far. Even though the team was blighted with unfavourable weather conditions at the start, and had to manage their nerve problems worrying about the match against ACJC, they eventually ousted the other school with their strong passion and desire for the win today. It is indeed the best match played today, with an astounding 5-0 win over ACJC. Well done girls and congratulations in getting into the TOP 8! Hwa Chong is soooo proud of every one of you. (:

Tennis Girls

In today’s home match against CJC, which was also their last preliminary match, the girls’ team finished with a team score of 4-1! Well done!

1st Singles: 9-1
2nd Singles: 9-5
3rd Singles: 9-1
1st Doubles: 4-9
2nd Doubles: 9-6

Basketball Boys

The boys from the basketball team got their 2nd round campaign to a flying start with a 81-49 victory over Jurong JC at the Singapore Basketball Centre. Their 2 remaining matches of the 2nd round are against ACSI on Friday, 7th May and AJC on Tuesday, 11th May! All the way, boys!

Soccer Boys

In their last fixture of the quarter-finals, opponents Serangoon JC put 2 past HC to go into the break 2-0. Despite dominating possession in the 2nd half, HC failed to capitalize on their chances and finished the game 0-2. The draw for this 2nd round of the competition did not go easy on the boys’ team as they faced last year’s champions VJC, runners-up MJC and another top seed SRJC. We applaud the soccer team making it this far, and for breaking HC’s 6-year drought by making it into the quarter finals itself! :D

Bowling

In today’s Girls Doubles event at the Nationals, our girls managed to maintain a seeded position even though there was a sligth dip in average score. Special mention to Goh Xin Yan who bowled a high game of 245! The boys team will be having their Quartet event tomorrow, which is crucial in determining the boys team’s chances of achieving the 4th or 5th seeded position for the first time in 10 years. Go HCBowl!

Volleyball Boys

Facing off Temasek Junior College earlier today, the volleyballers continued their winning streak achieved since the start of this season with a score of 2-0, with individual set scores 27-25 and 25-19, and have proceeded easily into the second round. Meeting more skilled opponents in the next round, the team will need every support you can give. All the best!

Badminton Boys

Deemed another crucial match which determined the success of entry into the second round, our shuttlers grabbed this opportunity to display their prowess against Temasek Junior College, winning them with a narrow score of 3-2 and are through to the next round. Well done!

Basketball Girls

Playing against Dunman High today, our basketballers, ONCE AGAIN(!) achieved an exhilarating, fantastic, and awesome score of 94-12! Congratulations to the team!

Match Report: Badminton Guys vs SAJC

May 2nd, 2010 by CCA PRO

Our male shuttlers took on Saint Andrews Junior College on Friday, and proved dominant over the other college. This was a crucial match against a fairly strong opponent, yet a win was absolutely essential to ensure their qualifications into the 2nd round. The shuttlers were definitely up to the task and took the match 5-0!

First Singles: Lim Jie Rong

Jie Rong ousted his opponent convingly and in fact pretty easily, with his superior speed and accurate shots, showing us the very reasons why he is our strongest singles player. The match was easily taken over with a score of 2-0.

First Doubles: Lee Keng Boon and Ray Tan

Took the first set easily but were made to work very hard to win the 2nd one in the tie-breaker with a score of 24-22. They eventually managed to settle their nerves to claim victory, putting Hwa Chong’s score 2-0 up.

Second Singles: Chong Kai Ren

Up against the strongest singles player for SAJC, an intense match went Kai Ren’s way after two hardly-fought sets. Managed to tap on his experience to turn the tide of the game, Kai Ren was exceptionally good with his control of the shuttle at the net too. To Hwa Chong’s delight, his victory was translated into a victory for HC over SAJC.

Second Doubles: Lucas Lim and Nigel Ang

With improved teamwork and inspiration, this pair managed to shrug off Wednesday’s slip to take the game 2-0 against SAJC’s strongest doubles pair. They remained focused throughout the game and fought hard for every single point and were duly rewarded at the end.

Third Singles: Lim Rui Jin

Despite nursing a sickness, Rui Jin’s skills and movement proved to be too good for his opponent. His match was won 2-0 convincingly too, displaying a range of excellent shots.

The shuttlers will be playing against Temasek Junior College next Tuesday, and is a must-win yet again to ensure their qualification. Support will be greatly appreciated!
