Olympics’12 @ HC!! Post 2
August 4th, 2012 by IT DirectorHi everyone !!
Feng’s History-Defining Moment
Feng Tian Wei has finally done it for Singapore. After a 52 year old wait for an Olympics medal in an individual event, Feng Tian Wei trounced her opponent Kasumi Ishikawa of Japan 4-0 in sets to bring home a bronze medal for the Women’s singles event. Singapore are also favourites to land a medal in the women’s team table tennis event.
Feng’s victory is a strong indication that Singapore’s sports scene has been growing from strength to strength, and that the future outlook for Singapore’s sports is good.
As part of our Olympic updates, we would also like to highlight the feats of two swimmers who have performed excellently in the pool for the Olympics.
Ye Shiwen
Firstly we have Ye Shiwen, the female Chinese swimmer who stole the headlines with a superb performance in both the women’s 200m and 400m individual medley. In both events, she was initially lagging behind her competitors but showed great character and resilience in overtaking her opponents, eventually clinching the gold medal for both events. At a tender age of 16, her performances have shown her tremendous potential in swimming and we can expect her to perform even better in the future Olympics.
Michael Phelps
Michael Phelps is another individual who has set himself a class above others. He cemented himself as a swimming legend after winning two silver medals (in the 4 x 100m relay and the 200m butterfly) and three gold medals (in the 4 x 200m relay, 200m individual medley and 100m individual medley) in the Olympics. This brought his total medal tally in the Olympics to 21 medals, with 17 golds. While it is apparent that he has not be performing at his peak, his sheer determination and resilience in the Olympics is awe-inspiring.
As part of our Olympics special, we would like to present you with our very own exclusice interviews with our fellow CCA leaders:
Gymnastics
Interviewee: Choy Dian Shao, Captain, Gymnastics Team (Boys)
Q: How do the Olympic gymnasts train for their events?
A: The gymnasts first do a lot of strength training in the form of basic exercises such as running and pull ups. These enable them to build up muscles which in turn enable them to practise more difficult moves. They then create their own routines with the help of their coaches. They spend a lot of time and effort in perfecting every stroke of the routine, as even a minor mistake as not landing gracefully, would cause a reduction in their final score. As such the routines that gymnasts display during the Games are the result of months of determination and hard work.
Judo
Interviewee: Lee Sin Lie, Captain, Judo (Girls)
Q: Who are you looking forward to at the Olympics ?
A: I would be looking forward to Teddy Riner from France. Our coach often shows us his videos during training. He combines both technique and strength to defeat his opponents. He has been indomitable in his category, winning the World Judo Championship early this year. He has already been considered a legend by many. (Indeed, Riner went on to clinch a gold medal in the Judo Men’s +100 kg category.)
