Orientation 2012 – Post Event Megapost

February 15th, 2012 by IT Director

Hi J1s!

First off, congratulations to

Apollo

Winner of Wargames

Apollo

Winner of class performance, by 12A15

Artemis

Winner of class flag, by 12S7B

Ares

Winner of POP

And last but definitely not least,

APOLLO

Winners of the 2012 faculty shield!

Great job guys!

It’s been an exhilarating 2 weeks since you first set foot in HC as part of the official freshman batch of Hwachongians. We hope the fond memories you have had with your OG and CT will last you a lifetime.  Now, let’s take a look back to the moment when it all began…

On the 1st of Feb, OGs met in the hall for the first time

All strangers, but that didn’t dampen the mood for the games ahead

With wet sponges…

Armchairs…

And of course, the legendary Slippery Slope

You didn’t always win, but cheers kept the spirit high

Together in song, dance and cheer

Meeting your enthusiastic fac coms.

Soon, it was time for war

And we mean WAR

But in the end, we’re still one Hwa Chong

Having a wild campfire night under the moon

Singing, dancing and cheering our hearts out

Igniting the fac spirit and the Hwa Chong spirit.

And thus, orientation came to an end.

But before that, the ultimate showdown at the Post-Orientation Party!

We saw a fantastic showing by Artemis, with their cool and innovative umbrellas

Athena showed us what it means to party, in their swaggerin’ white caps

Leave it to Apollo to bust the beat with their rhythmic drumsticks

But in the end, Ares swept the floor with smooth moves, donning their very fitting white gloves

Once again, congratulations Ares!

We’ve had a great time organizing orientation and making it the best it can be! Presenting to you your OGLs, the 38th Students’ Council

Now that orientation is REALLY over, it’s back to school for you guys! Next year, it’ll be your juniors’ turn to experience this amazing event, but in the meantime, remember to have your fair share of fun and treasure your time in J1!

See you next year!

A Very Important Message…

January 29th, 2012 by IT Director

Hello C1s!

Hope you had a great lunar new year! As some of you might already know, orientation is coming up soon — from 31st January to 10th February. The theme for this year’s orientation is Vivace; it is a musical term to describe “a lively or vivacious manner”. Indeed, we hope that all of you are hyped up for 10 days of games and fun. Over these 10 days, you will meet new people, learn more about HC and soak in the SODACHE culture!

Stay tuned to HCunite for more information regarding orientation in time to come! In the mean time, feel free to check out the SODACHE – song, dance and cheer videos!

Cheers,
Orientation Committee ’12

Boom Boom Pow! – Campfire

February 9th, 2011 by IT Director

Hello J1s!

Campfire night is on Friday and as you might have known, every class is required to do a class flag and a class performance. Work hard for it because you might just be the lucky ones chosen to represent the faculty :)

For those who might not have caught the briefing today, here’s the judging criteria and rubrics!

For class flag, you’ll be given your flags pretty soon and each class will be required to present their flag with a five minute time limit. We’re looking out for 4 main criteria:

1. Representation of faculty

2. Visibility (whether the colours/design can be identified with easily)

3. Creativity/Novelty

4. Presentation of the flag

For class presentation, each class will be given a maximum of five minutes to perform (after which you will be shooed offstage). Here’s what you’ll be judged on:

1. Audience Engagement

2. Use of faculty elements

3. Creativity/Novelty

4. Audience Response

Remember, this contirbutes a large percentage to the faculty shield so if you want to win, you know what to do.

If there are any questions, feel free to direct them to your faculty heads and rest assured we will answer them asap (:

Love,

Iris, Jeff and Patricia

Had Some POPpin’ Good Fun?

February 16th, 2010 by CNY Committee

Hey Hwa Chong! Hope you’ve spent the break well resting and gearing up for the rest of the school term (and collecting those precious Ang Baos)! Time to recount the events on your last Friday!

12th February was definitely a day of joy and excitement. With our very own Hwa Chong Chinese New Year Celebration, 花舞, attracting the young and the slightly older ( sorry seniors) alike in a fit to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Citygate: CANDY with a tinge of manga.

But in any case, students and seniors alike decked the corridors of the wings and 天堂, adding to the touch of liveliness the day presented.

The morning was packed with exciting performances courtesy of our Lion Dance, Choir, Chinese Orchestra, Chinese Dance Society and the Music And Dance Society and Wushu!

Our emcees: Xueyan & Zeyu

HC Choir completes the SMILE! Don’t you see one!

HC Chinese Dance at their best again

With a pleasantly surprising performance from our Music And Dance Society!

Wushu: the valour package.

Make that a precision and top-class one as well. :D

With the street market following the performances, Hwa Chongians experienced a festival that is worth remembering in every right.

A fair wih the undiscounted creativeness of our students.

The mass Lao Yu Sheng was the highlight of the event, with everyone crowding around their own class benches ( or stalls) and lo hei for a more prosperous new year. The FEEL of Hwa Chong family was in everyone’s bones.

Go, teachers!

CNY Celebration, 花舞, came to a splendid end with the sun beaming brightly on the red tiger in the middle of central plaza, casting a brilliant shadow of Red, Blue, Green and Yellow.

We could not ask for a more apt build-up as the atmosphere paved the way for the explosiveness of what was to come:

POP 2010!

One by one each faculty immersed themselves in 3 minutes of bliss, giving full vent to their dazzling moves, drawing incessant cheers from the entire plaza and wings.

Ahh-hooooot!!!

Bullgirls and bullguys unite!

Ahh-whoooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Dancing God of War

The best faculty may have been crowned by our judges, but you guys know that the best dance is one that entails soul and sweat. You did it, together, J1s!

What’s a party without SODACHE?! Here we go again! Get you mind set, and have a wild, wild time!

The very vibrancy of our school.

One Hwa Chong, as always, and forever!

Ad Infinitum: Orientation Video

February 8th, 2010 by Orientation Committee

Hey Hwa Chong,

Sensorium Vale has kindly uploaded the 2010 Ad Infinitum video!

Enjoy :D

Ad Infinitum: I Gotta Feeling!

February 7th, 2010 by Orientation Committee

The cheering, dancing, singing, wet games, OG dinners/lunches, icebreaking, flag-painting, rehearsing and euphoria culminated in a heart-stopping visual extravanganza on Friday, complete with witty faculty items, mind-blowing dances and the fireball with its twin firecrackers.

Surely, Hwa Chongians didn’t have to stay until the finale of the campfire  to have any provoke any inkling that Friday night would be a hell of a time. We gotta feeling right from the start, isn’t that right, J1s! After a week and a half of hype, Campfire Nite concludes Ad Infinitum and signifies the freshmen’s start of their academic year, with prospects of class bonding and OG outings ever-present. Just remember to study as hard as you play, people!

A smooth afternoon preparation was a sign of many good things to come.

Before long, the programme was given a soothing start with Oral Participation, our school’s very own beatbox/vocal group, consisting of Lester, Ryan, Preston, Zhehou and Yehan. The crowd’s reactions were overhwhelming, and it would only get more thunderous as the night went on.

Apollo kick-started the class flag and item contest, providing numerous occasions of unrestrained laughter with their witty skit. Rhymes don’t just work brilliantly in kindergarden, apparently :D The message of ONE Hwa Chong stayed strong throughout the item, as it did during all Faculty items that night.

You gotta agree, the miniature campfire looks really adorable!

Next up, the Goddess of the Hunt, Artemis entertained us with a skit depicting a guy who employs the help of the four gods/goddesses, representing the 4 faculties, in order to woo the girl he desires. The item stole the show with one-liners such as

“Hey, my tan is darker than your shadow!”
“You’re so hot you make my proteins denature!”

and simple but effective antics that induced laughter all around.

Cupid’s weapon of mass infatuation.

Inhale this, Hwachong! AWHOOOOOO!!!

Ares, God of War,  was consistent with the message of a united Hwa Chong, as they presented their item and flag with style, wit and creative slapstick moments.

Dance it, God of War!

Finally, Athena, Goddess of Wisdom, gave a rousing performance which made the cohort nolstagic for the classic Nintendo Pokemon games. Green Tea, the healthier choice. Mmmm :D

Get on your elevator!!! Get high, people!

The Students’ Council then danced to the music of Speedy Gonzalez and presented the ’10 batch dance, Tik Tok, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Time for the actual campfire! Your awesome Faculty Heads lit up their respective faculty flames, surrounding the central flame that, no doubt, represented the Hwa Chong family.

Your Orientation Chairperson, Tian Ci proceeded to light the fireball, thus kick starting the night’s session of song, dance and cheer!

Make way for the boss!

Definitely a sight to behold!

Hwa Chong Kebahbah!

And who would expect an addictive, cohesive plaza dance with everyone rockin’ to the beat of I Gotta Feeling by the Black Eyed Peas? An unplanned but solid way to end the night of all nights!

Congrats to 10A14 for winning the Best Class Item and 10S7D for the Best Class Flag! Next up, Post-Orientation Party, where thee faculty with the most impressive dance will be decided! Look forward to it, people!

Campfire Nite ’10, a night to remember and reminsce, with the eternal Hwa Chong flame burning strongly in all of us.

Hope you guys had fun! To infinity and beyond, Hwa Chong! :D
Till next year’s Orientation, see you!
