HEY C2s!!

Are you looking forward to Prom? Time to have fun after the gruelling ‘A’s! We know that Prom is a very important event for you, where you get to celebrate your successes in JC and come together with your classmates and friends for your very last Hwa Chong event to culminate your 2 years in Hwa Chong. It is, of course, thus important that you dress to the nines. You may be fretting about what to wear, and whether it’ll burn holes in your pockets.  Don’t worry, the ITDs have got you covered! We headed down to Far East Plaza and Lucky Plaza in search of more affordable yet equally stylish options, so here are the results! If you prefer to shop from the comfort of your home, we included online stores towards the end of this post so scroll away!!

Far East Plaza

Here’s a special mention of Love Potion, located on the 4th level of Far East Plaza (#04-58), if you wish to rent a dress. The short dresses can be rented at $50 each. If you are looking for the fluffy, princess-like gowns, they can be rented at a higher price of around $100 each. The colourful ones can be purchased at $100.

You can check out their website for more details, they even have a tab specially for prom dresses: http://lovepotion.com.sg. Having catered to the needs of many prom-goers, Love Potion is definitely the right place to go to! Renting a dress is a viable option if you want to go for the glamorous look but you don’t think you’ll ever have opportunities to wear the elaborate dress again.

Full House (#03-102) is another store that offers a variety of evening gowns for you to choose from! To check out more of their collection or to enquire about their dresses, feel free to visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Full-House-富豪斯-269852103174540/.

Lucky Plaza

Clothes going from $10! Where else can you get such deals?

SULU Connection at Basement 1!

$10 from SULU

$18 from SPEED, also comes in navy blue- the asymmetrical hemline adds a fun twist to the dress, while keeping it classy! The white dress with the black accents is definitely value for money!

$10 from Flaunt It

Flaunt It is our favourite store because it is very rare to get presentable and high quality dresses at such a low price! These dresses are not too over the top and certainly practical, considering prom is only a one-off event and you can always wear your dress again for another more casual occasion.

You won’t be able to spot as many as shops in Lucky Plaza, but these shops offer dresses of a much lower price range than Far East Plaza. All the dresses featured above do not exceed $20. Warning: you really have to get down to it and comb through every rack to search for that one thing that you want. Some shops may appear a little dingy initially, but keep an open mind when browsing through the dresses- some of the dresses we saw (as shown above) are truly value-for-money!

After choosing your dress, of course you have to find the perfect shoes to go with your outfit! Check out the following options!

Far East Plaza

Navi (#03-138B) offers trendy shoes of all sorts of styles, be it edgy or classy, at affordable prices starting from slightly above $20. Currently, shoes of one block colour, specifically black or white, are very popular and I’m sure you can get one of those pairs here!

Alice (#03-123C) is comparable to Navi, with shoes of similar styles. You are sure to find the perfect shoes to go with your outfit!

BONUS: Food!

Far East Plaza

Shopping can get intense- if you’re looking for sustenance after a long day of scouring Orchard road, here are some eateries for you to consider! These food stalls are all acclaimed and often reviewed in food articles! We personally think the Hainanese Delicacy looks good.

Lucky Plaza

At Lucky Plaza, you can also savour the cheap local delights of the Philippines. We promise they are really delicious!

Hair, Makeup and Manicure

Far East Plaza

Classic Manicure and Pedicure $25

Express Manicure $8

Express Pedicure $10

Far East Plaza is truly a one-stop station where you can get your hair, nails and makeup done. The nail parlours generally offer competitively low and similar prices. There are almost 5 nail parlours on every level, with most prices falling within a similar range, so it’s really up to you to pick the ambience you like the best.

Of course, if you are looking for other convenient options to shop, there are always online sites to go to! We have sourced for a few credible online sites with fabulous outfits within a reasonable price range for you as well. In fact, this might be the better option!

Zalora (http://www.zalora.sg/women/clothing/evening-dresses/)

Zalora offers many types of evening dresses, you are bound to find one that suits you! In addition, the dresses are all very affordable!  The cheapest dress costs only SGD 16.90, while the most expensive (most of the pricier items are branded) will set you back SGD 230. There are over 500 evening dresses for you to choose from, so you’re bound to find something you like!

Upstage (http://www.upstage.com.sg/)

Upstage is another great online shop to go to as it offers dresses for special occasions. They even have a prom tab for prom-goers to look through. The dresses here are more expensive than Zalora, hovering around slightly below SGD 100 to SGD 150. The cheapest dress cost around SGD 30! A good thing about Upstage is that they allow you to narrow down search options according to your preferences- you can opt for specific necklines, silhouettes and hemlines to allow for easy shopping.

Dressabelle Singapore (http://dressabelle.com.sg/)

In addition to dresses, Dressabelle Singapore offers a collection of shoes, making it convenient for you to settle your prom outfit in one shot!

While they do not offer evening dresses in a single tab, if you scroll through the pages you’ll definitely find something that catches your eye. Most of the dresses are quite affordable, averaging around SGD 40. We personally think that this site features some really amazing prom dresses suitable for you!

Intoxiquette (http://www.intoxiquette.com/)

Intoxiquette offers free local mail delivery on the condition that you join their mailing list, so ordering from this site would be highly convenient! They offer quite a wide range of dresses all for under SGD 50!

The Editor’s Market (http://www.theeditorsmarket.com/)

Boasting a slightly more minimalist range of clothing, the Editor’s Market is a great place to shop if you’re looking for outfits you can continue to wear after prom (as the outfits featured are not as extravagant!). Shopping with your friends will help to make prices more affordable, as buying in bulk (2pcs/ 3pcs) makes individual items cheaper!

With so many choices available, you might be at a loss as to how to pick a dress. We’ve summarised some of the season’s trends for you, so this may help you decide!

  1. Bodice dresses- dresses made of two different materials can help to add texture and flair to your look!
  2. Flower power- floral has been making a comeback recently, but having too many floral prints on a dress can make it appear very jarring so be selective when it comes to floral accents or prints!
  3. Metallic look- this has also become popular recently- having metallic texture outfits gives a very chic and cool vibe
  4. Asymmetrical dresses- these dresses are really funky, and they’ve been very in style recently!do you

In case you are jealous of the huge number of shops for girls, don’t worry, there’s also a myriad of choices for you!

Unfortunately, the cost of suits is significantly higher for guys compared to girls, with the prices of most suits typically above $200. But don’t worry: We have went down to Far East Plaza and here are some of our interesting observations!

At the store “Z”, you can get SPECIAL suits for Prom at only $100 onwards! What’s more interesting is that, unlike many stores that mainly sell typical black suits, here it offers a great variety of designs and colours for suits, shoes, and whatever you need. They will certainly make you stand out at Prom!

The exact address is as follows:

14 Scotts Road

#03-104 Far East Plaza

Singapore 228213 (see map)

Scroll down to take a look at some of the suits on display!

Of course, if you don’t mind paying a bit more or want to look more professional, you may want to consider going to a tailor- this is for those of you that want suits that fit your exact measurements and build. If you think you can find use this suit after prom, then a tailored suit wouldn’t be a bad idea!

We looked around, and here’s the cheapest option for a tailored suit we could find- Sam’s Custom Tailors offers suits at $180 onwards, which is quite a reasonable price at Far East Plaza. This is their exact address:

Sam’s Custom Tailors

Unit 02-55,14 Scotts Road,

Far East Plaza, Singapore 228213

Tel: (+65) 63338936

They offer tailored single breasted, double breasted, trousers, tuxedos. They’ve received good reviews on Tripadvisor for good quality and fast collection time.

As you can see, it is (sadly) quite expensive for guys to buy suits. Therefore, renting a suit for Prom may be a more economical option, especially if you’re not looking for a suit to be reworn.

If you just want to rent a generic suit or tuxedo, there are plenty of choices out there: Many tailors have created a side business to rent out formal attires, so you can easily find a tailor shop that offers such services!

We have also found two shops which provide rental services for Prom suits specifically:

  1. MySingaporeTailor.com

Yes, it sounds like a website, but it’s also a physical store. It is famous for having a wide range of quality menswearstyles and designs to choose from, as supported by online reviews. This is where you can rent Prom suits at a really economical price of $89 or $99 only! There is also a variety of designs and colour for suits, but some of them may come at higher rental prices such as $159, $179 or even up to $259.

The rental price is for a block of 72 hours. You can head down to their store at Concorde Hotel to have a look at more Prom suits, or check out their website for more information: http://www.mysingaporetailor.com/rental_designs.php?collectionID=60&gender=1

100 Orchard Road

03-01/02 Concorde Hotel & Shopping Mall (former Le Meridien Hotel)

Singapore 238840

  1. Fashion Tailors

Here is another store famous for its Formal Wear Hiring services! You can rent normal prom suits at a price of $120, or rent tuxedo suits at $170. Similarly, you can hold them for 3 days.

For more information, you may visit them at Orchard Plaza, or check out their website: http://www.fashiontailor.com.sg/formal-wear-hiring.php

150 Orchard Road, #02-01 Orchard Plaza

Although tuxedos are usually more expensive than suits, tuxedos are typically for celebrations and special events, so if you want to look particularly dapper for Prom, a tuxedo may be the choice for you!

Some of you may be looking for branded options that are equally affordable – the ITDs have got your back!

H&M does not offer online shopping, so you would have to head down to a physical store location to pick up a suit. To save some time, you can check out the H&M online website to get a better sense of what styles are available- most of the options are simple classics that look good with any sort of tie! H&M can be your one-stop to pick up all you need – shoes, trousers, blazers and ties. The suits at H&M have gotten positive reviews for their durability and their flattering fit. Most of the blazer jackets fall within S$150, and the trousers mostly are S$60. Our personal preference would be the slim fit blazer jacket and the slim fit trousers – they tend to be the most fitting out of all options, considering that this purchase would mean that the suit isn’t tailored to your exact build! Be sure to try on the items to find the best size for yourself before making any purchases!

You can find outlets here:

  • Raffles Place
  • Suntec City
  • ION Orchard
  • Kallang Wave Mall
  • Orchard Building
  • JEM

These are some items you can expect to see at the outlets.

The options here are slightly more pricey, with blazer jackets ranging from S$150 to S$200 while the suit jackets are mostly above S$200. The good thing about accessing their online shop is that they offer sets – trouser, jacket and sometimes a vest. The cheapest set option would set you back around S$200 – which is quite value for money! These sets are great if you’re worried about how to match colours and styles- they do the job for you! Of course, you can also buy the individual items in the set as well. Topman offers a wide variety of textures, colours and suit cuttings so feel free to explore to see what best suits you! We found the Burgundy Skinny Fit Suit to be quite eye-catching (S$262) , but if you would like to go with a classic, the New Fit Black suit (S$262) is definitely something you can consider.

Topman offers free shipping for orders above S$190! Alternatively, you can head down to their physical stores.

  • Raffles City
  • ION
  • VivoCity
  • Bugis Junction
  • Knightsbridge
  • Tampines One
  • JEM

This site may be less known to you, but if you’re looking for suits within S$200, you could check out:

Boasting a wide range of suits (two button, three button or vested), Overstock has numerous suits available for under S$200. The international shipping requires around 3-5 business days, and will be listed upon checkout.

In summary, we feel that purchasing a suit online or at local stores would be pragmatic in the long term, if you intend to keep the suit for future formal events. Otherwise, if you just want to shine at Prom, renting a suit or tuxedo would be a good option as well!

With all these places in mind, you may still have difficulty making a decision as to what to wear to prom. To make the process a little easier, we’ve identified some of the season’s trends for you!

  1. Cuffed pants!
  2. Patterned pocket squares
  3. subdued shades of green paired with colours like black, beige, grey, burgundy and navy

You might want to check out this website for some inspiration! http://www.executivestyle.com.au/25-of-the-best-mens-suits-for-2015-gh8t0v

What we recommend is that if you’re not as willing to pay exorbitant prices for a tailored suit, the branded options that sell pre-made suits would be more SUITable! Before any purchase, make sure it fits as well as possible. You can make your look unique by looking for the perfect tie,  or pocket square or even lapels! We also love the look of showing a little shirt cuff- so if you want to achieve that look, make sure the suit jacket ends just above your wrists.
